In The Shadow of Mount Thesiger.....on the WildCoast...

DSCN2389.JPG

The town of Port St.Johns, lies just south a couple hours of drive from Durban at the mouth of the Mzimvubu River, hidden by the shadow of Mount Thesiger at sunset

as you travel to Port St.Johns ...the road itself is a scenic one through hills and valleys, scattered townships and farms dot the roadside as cattle and other livestock roam seemingly freely, be weary when driving as they sometimes cause accidents to happen. I personally wouldn't recommend driving the road at night either, as mist also becomes a factor in the valleys and passes.

and makeshift villages can be found everywhere, it is a hardy place, somewhat forgotten by time...

Mzimvubu River

Mzimvubu is a Xhosa word which translates to "Home/Place Of Hippopotamus" in English.

The small town has roughly 8000 residents of whom most are Xhosa, boasts a couple shops, supermarket, bank, post office and a clinic. Mostly relying on fishing and tourism, the town has a variety of guest accommodation available. My personal favorite is Jungle Monkey, they have various options to choose from and are centrally situated.

Port. St.Johns boasts some of the best fishing around, there are also whale watching excursions, hiking trails, birding routes and many activities to choose from.

the entire place is all about relaxing, the mood is uplift and people are friendly as seen here

On top of Mount Thesiger looking at the turn off into town

the view from here is absolutely amazing, the locals go up to this old airfield on top of a mountain for sun-downers, I couldn't think of a better place.

I was amazed at the ravens playing in the wind as it hits the mountain, some playing games with rocks, picking them up, flying them up and dropping it, then diving down to catch it before another can grab it.

Thanks for the tour. Love it. Everything you wrote - it made me wonder why Africa is called the dark continent - so much color and light and beauty.

Thank you, true there is an abundance of color and beauty, I believe the reference Dark Continent just a reference to what the continent looks like from space at night though, due to lack of infrastructure ie electricity.

I didn't know that - and it makes sense.
