Hong Kong Snapshot (89) – story of Sun Yat-sen, founding father of modern China, starts!

in #travel6 years ago

In the previous twenty-five posts of the “Hong Kong Snapshot” series, we talked about different places of HK in the angle of history. We talked about the history of the British getting the HK Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. The history influenced HK a lot, but only little to the world. In the history of HK, we had a person, who changed China, and even the history of the World. He is Sun Yat-sen

Sun Yat-sen was the founding father of modern China and brought China to the modern stage which changed the world. Do you know that Hong Kong is the most important place that lead him to the road of the revolution of China? In the coming posts, I will talk about the footsteps of Sun in HK.

Let us walk up the hill from Sai Wan, HK Island. We found a school called the “Bonham Road Government Primary School”. 100 years ago, the address is the former Diocesan School and Orphanage, is the first school that Sun studied in HK.

Sun Yat-sen was born in the village of Cuihang in GuangZhau of China. The birth year was 1966. Sun lived in a poor family and with the support of his elder brother, Sun moved to Honolulu in Hawaii to further studied. In Honolulu, Sun was inspired by Christianity and also the modern world. Under the situation, he convinced the Chinese workers to stop worshiping the “Holy Emperor Lord Guan”. With the worried of Sun embracing Christianity, his elder brother soon sent him back home.

Going back home, Sun Yat-sun broke the statue of the Beijidian Temple with his friend Lu Haodong. It raised the anger of the villagers and the two young men escaped to Hong Kong.

They arrived HK in 1883 and studied in the Diocesan School and Orphanage. It is the first step of Sun in HK. The school is now a famous school in HK. In the past, The British HK didn’t have enough budget to support education in HK. It advised Church to do it instead. The Diocesan School and Orphanage was one of them. In 1860, the Diocesan native Female Training School, predecessor of the Diocesan School and Orphanage was built affiliated with the Diocesan of Victoria. It was a female school promoting education of women of HK. But later it was found that many graduates of the school, who knew English, became the ladies of the Western men. After a series of incident, the school was changed to “Diocesan School and Orphanage”, which was a male only school.

After years of development, the school is now called the Diocesan Boy’s School. It now consists of a campus in Kowloon, with 50000 square meter, which the 3rd largest secondary school in HK. Don’t look down on the number. It is a very big number in HK. The school is also one of the best secondary school in HK with great achievement in academy, sports and music. Today, a number of influencing people in the Politics, Law, Commerce, Arts and entertainment field of HK come from Diocesan Boy’s School.

Since the Diocesan School and Orphanage moved to Kowloon in 1927, the address experienced a number of rebuild and is now the “Bonham Road Government Primary School”. In 1996, to commermorate the 130th birthday of Sun Yat-sen, the HK government set up the Dr Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail and introduce the stories of Sun in HK. The Bonham Road Government Primary School”is one of the spots. But the school now is not opened to public so we cannot visit.

Sun Yat-sen moved to The Government Central School after less than a year of studied in the Diocesan School and Orphanage. Next time, we will talk about the Government Central School.
