Hong Kong Snapshot (88) Old Tai Po Police Office, first police office of the New Territories 香港隨拍 (88) 舊大埔警署，香港新界的第一所警署

In 1899, The British officially took control of the New Territories of Hong Kong. After the Six-Day War which fought against the indigenous inhabitants of the New Territories, The British HK started to think of the ways to prevent the rebellion of the indigenous inhabitants. One of them was the building of police offices. In the last post we talked about the Ping Shan Police Office. This time, we talk about the Old Tai Po Police Office, the first police office of the New Territories.

1899年，英國正式接管香港新界，當中經過新界原居民激烈的反抗，暴亂平息後，港英政府一方面安撫新界村民，另一方面亦有多項措施以預附新界村民的再次反抗，其中一項就是建警署。上一回談到香港新界的屏山警署，這次要說的是新界的第一所警署 – 舊大埔警署。

On the 16th Apr 1899, The British raised the British flag at the Flagstaff Hill of Tai Po, the New Territories, which stated the start of the British HK controlling the New Territories. To effectively control the New Territories, the British HK built a number of police offices. One of them was the old Tai Po Police Office. It was also the headquarter of the Police Force of the New Territories.

1899年4月16日，英國在新界的大埔旗桿山升起英國旗，揭示英國接管新界的開始，之後，為了維持新界的治安，及防止新界再次動亂，港英政府在新界多個地方建立警署，其中在大埔旗桿山，港英政府就建了大埔警署，同時亦是新界的警察總部。

The Police office is a one-storey utilitarian building. It’s simple and traditional and represent the classic colonial architectural style. The Police Office was built on the Flagstaff Hill and could monitor the whole Tai Po on the hill. The police force consisted of 5 British and 32 Indian and Chinese polices. It was the headquarter of the Police Force in the New Territories until 1949. After the World War II, the building became regional police station, office and temporary hostel, until 2006 it was emptied. Today, the old Tai Po Police Office is preserved to be the Green-Hub, which promote and education the lower-carbon lives.

大埔警署採取了「實用主義」，整座建築只有一層高，簡單、傳統，是典型的殖民地建築風格。大埔警署建在旗桿山，可俯瞰整個大埔，是一個最理想的地點，警署由5位英籍及32位印度及華人籍警員營運， 一直到1949年，都是香港新界的警察總部。二次大戰後，建築物先後成為分區警署、辦事處及臨時宿舍，直到2006年空置停用。到了現在，警署已被活化成綠匯學苑，作低碳生活的教育及推廣。

The Old Tai Po Police Office is now HK Grade I historical building. Part of it is the education center of lower-carbon lives. Another part is the showroom to illustrate the history of the old police office as well as Tai Po.

現時舊大埔警署已是香港一級歷史建築，一邊是低碳生活的教育中心，另一邊則是舊大埔警署的文物展覽室，向市民介紹大埔警署以及大埔的歷史。

If you wish, you may also stay overnight in the hostel of Green-Hub. But be reminded that as the site promotes the lower-carbon lives, there is no air-conditor!

Comparing the HK Island and Kowloon, there are actually much more valuable historical treasures in the New Territories. If there is chance, I highly recommend you the visit the New Territories.

對比起香港島及九龍，新界其實保留著更多更寶貴的歷史寶藏，如果大家有機會來香港，一定要了解新界，參觀新界。
