TIL - How smart today´s AI (artificial intelligence) is. The art of rebuilding human conscious.
Inspired by a documentary I saw on TV yesterday, I started investigating the momentous advance of artificial intelligence. I had really no idea which massive steps technology has done so far!
'Are we able to rebuild human conscious? Are robots which are guided by artificially created neuronal networks able to behave like a real human being?
It seems like the movies have had an answer to all these questions long time ago. In my article I will explain why. "If you can dream it, you can do it" Walt Disney said once. I think he was absolutey right!
Have you ever thought about cloning yourself and rebuilding your own conscious?
During the mentioned TV documentary I saw yesterday there was done a really interesting experiment. They built a clone of the actress Gemma Chan known from the famous TV series 'Humans' and sent it on stage on behalf of the real Gemma.
The team was formed by scientists, psychologists, body make-up artists and of course TV producers. In the end they made it and designed an absolutely real-looking and real-acting robot. It was amazing!
The big question was: would the press realize that they were doing an inverview with a robot?
They didn´t! They placed the clone in front of a camera and let it do some interviews with journalists talking to them through a video chat. No one of them noticed they were talking to a robot!
The 'real Gemma' was impressed and so the audience was, including myself.
Is artificial intelligence be able to become more intelligent than we originally expected?
All of us do know the movie 'iRobot', and actually the story behind it is one of the biggest concerns computer scientists do have nowadays. The movie is transmitting one of the most common feelings people do have when thinking about robots: FEAR.
It´s the fear of the unknown. It´s the fear of something we supposedly cannot control.
Why could robots become more intelligent than us? Some key assets:
- They don´t forget anything.
- They don´t grow older.
- They have infinite energy ressources.
- They don´t have unpredictable emotions and act 100% rationally.
Working on artificial intelligence is a sensitive issue. What if AI was the next big evolutionary step and took over everything human beings have build so far?
Although scientists agree on the fact that research in the area of AI has to be done very carefully, they also agree on its need. Especially the area of medical research couldn´t be imagined without AI technologies nowadays. So besides the risk, we cannot stop that train anymore.

It was all predicted by the movies!
If we look back in cinema´s history we might believe that film producers have visionary power.
Do you remember '2001 - A Space Odyssey', a movie done by Stanley Kubrick in 1968 (!) where video calls where done and tablets had been used?
50 years later video calls are kind of our 'daily business' and almost everybody has got a tablet at home. Isn´t this simply amazing!?
Do you remember 'Minority Report' (2002) where Tom Cruise predicted crimes which were supposed to happen in the future?

Do you remember all of these Science Fiction movies where cars are replaced by flying shuttles?
Maybe we are going to fly instead of drive faster than we can actually imagine!

How could they know? Maybe film producers have been always good investigators. Ask scientists and researchers on what they are currently working - and you may know which will be the upcoming technologies in the near future.
Artificial intelligence is surely one of the most interesting technological sectors in our today´s world. During the past decades it has made steps which are absolutely impressive. So we are expecting great times here!

the main thing i think about this is these AIs will have programming flaws, because we built them, and we are flawed. there are lots of representations of this in fiction, not all are positive. here is one angle .
