TIL that the letter J is the only letter of the English alphabet that is not present in the Periodic Table.

in #til8 years ago (edited)

But of course, after reading that the letter J is the only letter of the English Alphabet that is not present in the Periodic Table I had to look for one on the Internet, to review it and to see it by myself.

Here's one for you to see for yourself.

It's true that the J does not appear and as an extra data, neither does the letter Ñ that belongs to the Spanish alphabet.

After investigating for a while I found that the most accepted reason in general was that the first names were given in Latin or Greek and in these alphabets the letter J as such did not exist. Giving names to the elements in these languages became a tradition, reason why even now, at present, they do not exist.

According to some, the letter J is a deformation that had the letter I, reason why it also has a point above. It was also known initially as the "Dutch i".

And as another curious fact, the letter Q is officially not included but according to the nomenclature of IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) the "element to be discovered" with atomic number 114 known as Flerovio FI was formerly called Ununquadium or Uuq.

Do you agree that that is the reason why the letter J does not appear on the Periodic Table?

What do you think?
