What is yours to own

in #thoughts5 years ago (edited)

While I sit here singing my daughter to sleep, I was thinking about ownership of things. What do we actually own that can't be taken away by an authority? There really is very little.

You might own your house but no matter how much you love it or what it is worth, if the government wants to put a highway through it, they will. This is the same with your bank account too as after all, the money you have there isn't likely actually there, so what do you own?

It really is a very short list and pretty much, it is what you can carry with you. Skills, ideas, beliefs. Even these things can be manipulated and potentially even taken away but, they are relatively ours.

There is value in ownership of course, even if it is just the sense of ownership like a house or car. It is interesting to look at the vocabulary differences though as while the money buys the house, we know we don't own the money. I own a Honda, I have very little money in the bank. Having is not owning. I have a wife and daughter, I own neither.

This is something that people need to consider when they look at economic security as having money is not independence, it is allowance in a larger system. What is interesting when people talk crypto is that people own Bitcoin, own Steem. And while they might not have value at all, the sense of ownership itself does hold value.

There is a very practical reason that people say that if you do not have they keys, it isn't yours - as whoever does have the keys can take it away from whoever thinks they own it. This is also why it is a very bad idea to consider forking out someone's stake as it would prove that just like fiat, it isn't owned.

Crypto is about the security and responsibility of economic ownership and personal control of finances. The ideal is going to get increasingly important as we go forward and authorities try to make claim on what is not theirs to possess. I hope that people are ready to Braveheart it in the future.

But, from a quality of life perspective, we need a sense of control over our actions which require a sense of ownership. This is something that I have noticed develop in myself over my time on Steem as I increasingly feel that I have ownership over my stake and even if the economic value is zero, what is in my wallet is mine.

This is peace of mind, even if only in a limited and quite narrow sense of control. As I see it, this sense of ownership is one of the components that are going to drive mainstream adoption as people are increasingly having what they thought they owned taken away, piece by piece.

So many get into crypto in the hope to get rich and buy back into the very world where they own nothing. They don't seem to realise the precarious nature of the system they have dug deeper into or how little control they actually have as at any moment, an authority can wipe their board clean.

Keep something you own under lock, hold onto the key with your life. One day, it might be all you have.

I just woke up from sleep, but for an hour or two my body lay motionless, while my mind was awake. In my mind I reviewed how much money I made and how much that use to buy, but now it buys so much less. I also reflected upon how little of my assets I truly owned and really controlled. Finally I pondered about the insecurity of employment, where my economic well being depended on the whims of my employer.
I awoke with a uneasy feeling that my carefully crafted life, which looks so good to outsiders was not so good in reality.

Then I read this article about what do we really own and why some people are attracted to cryptocurrency. People come here to get crypto to trade for fiat. There’s nothing wrong with that, pay the rent or mortgage, feed and cloth your family, but crypto holds the promise of so much more. Freedom in terms of having wealth and security that you truly own, which is truly portable and which can provide real security.

My mind is wide open now and my eyes completely open. 🤯😬😯😱😨🧐🧐😂😊

These images are my mood and mindset transformation.

I awoke with a uneasy feeling that my carefully crafted life, which looks so good to outsiders was not so good in reality.

This is the fear that keeps us running, the appearance of managing while we cling to the edge hoping that our grip will hold until it no longer needs to. Then, it becomes someone else's position, another who must cling in hope. The edge is becoming slipperier each day.

Freedom in terms of having wealth and security that you truly own, which is truly portable and which can provide real security.

I sometimes wonder, if everyone could fit what they possess onto a usb stick, how many wouldn't flee from war, oppression and tyranny? And then, with all of their possessions and wealth, who wouldn't take them? How many could have walked away but instead stayed in an attempt to keep what they had worked their lives to own, only to realise, it was never going to stay theirs?

This is so true. Its funny how my non crypto friends like to ask about the price when the value is going down, but that matters very little to me.

I always tell them it can go to 0 for all I care. Its the skills I develop that matter the most to me. How to read markets, working on becoming a better writer, photographer. Learning what it means to build your own network, business, to learn what it means to create something that others value.

That is what Steem is worth to me.

When inflation and taxes continually crush our ability to purchase, jobs become scarce due to technological advancement and people are unable to feed themselves. Perhaps more will wish they had diversified their thoughts on currency.

Perhaps so. It will be interesting to see what happens. I will be most interested to see how if no one has jobs to buy anything who will these industries be making stuff for?

This is what is going to get interesting as I think that there will be a class gap of monumental proportions with the lower side essentially being fed cows that consume entertainment and pharma.

Every possession is rented, your 5 minute lease is renewed with each heartbeat.

It all ends, no matter the encryption.

I haven’t even gotten to the owning part yet as I am focusing on not having debts first! As many, I dug a deep whole but realized in time that I can adjust and avoid that vicious cycle. Then, I can consider the great journey of enjoying what I truly own!

Same boat and trying to paddle out of the whirlpool.

Keys are half decent weapons. Not that I have practical experience 😏

Crypto keys might be as well but I struggle to get my head around these things.

Imagine if war broke out and you had to run with your family. You want to carry your possessions or a numeric key? And that key could be stored in multiple ways and accessible from anywhere with internet. That is a worse case scenario of course but, is relevant to people still today unfortunately.

That speech " having is not owning" 👌

Truth. You make me value my small pile of Steem even more!

"Have you ever seen a hearse with a trailer?"
You only ever own, what you can take with you, when you leave.
That's why most of my money goes on travel.
