Dog walk diaries: small costs

in #thoughts6 years ago (edited)

With a student today we were talking about large projects and small costs and how quickly things can add up. The ability to track them all is difficult mainly because, people's unwillingness to record them all. What seems insignificant to an individual to note can add up when 1000 people don't see the significance.

This isn't uncommon in life is it? My student is a pack a day smoker and in Finland, that is ~7€ a pack or, 2500€ a year. The average salary in Finland is 3200€ a month which makes his smoking habit approximately 3 weeks of work or ~6% of his income. Pretty significant.

Of course, smoking has other costs associated with it but there are coffees, alcoholic drinks, junk food etc that all come under the same category.

What is interesting is that breaking something up into small pieces is an easy way to approach a large task as it lowers barriers and makes it seem much more manageable. What I wonder is if it will have a similar effect to change bad habits, if increasing the size of tasks would curb behaviours.

In some developing countries where tobacco advertising is still allowed and laws are lax, they break packs and sell individual cigarettes. This encourages smoking, especially in youth who can't afford a whole pack by lowering the cost to smoke significantly.

What if people took the approach of buying their cigarettes for a year upfront instead. What if my student had a cigarette fund of 2500€ that he would need before smoking, would it change hos behaviour? Mist likely because not much can be done with 7€ (10 Steem) a day but, a lot can be done with 2500€ (3000+ Steem). If he had the 2500 in his hand, would he invest in the next year of smoking?

It is interesting to think about considering that that amount invested into Steem now would mean that if it reaches its ATH of $7ish, would be worth 22,000€. Up in smoke.

Of course, no one I know has ever tried this but in a world of buy now, pay a bit at a time lifestyle (with interest), do people really know how much they are spending and, what the potential cost of it is? Subscriptions to Netflix, a couple beers for dinner, a new TV on a 24 month payoff period, a car paid monthly. A hundred small payments for what is often unnecessary and doesn't add a lot of value to quality of life.

None of us can go back in time but if you added up all the unnecessaries bought in the last 3 years that haven't added value to you life in any way, how much Steem could you buy today? As said, people aren't very good remembering and visualizing large series of small numbers as they do not make much of an impression but, it is likely quite a lot more than you think.

Incremental payments put everything within our reach except, wealth. At least for the majority of the world. Incremental payments make a small percentage of the population very wealthy indeed.

That's a smart way to allocate anticipated costs and expenses. With a plethora of budgeting and planning apps/software, it should be easy to know where every cent (not just $) is going. But... most people are too lazy, ignorant and downright irresponsible to do it. 🙄 They would rather watch a 15 minutes video of a mindless blogger or prank than sit down and become an economic wizard.

The world we live in. Crazy isn't it?

It is crazy and it won't change at all. Come AI or whatever. It's upto the producing segment of population to grab the opportunities by the horn and leap forward. These few fortunate ones will be at the top, have power and make all the decisions.

Save and grow your 💲, and use it for good and improving life.

Word.

I do not know why vices are expensive and yet people do not let them

What you say here "It is interesting to think that the amount invested in Steem now would mean that if it reaches its ATH of $ 7ish, it would have a value of € 22,000.In smoke" it is very interesting to know this, it is all a matter of taking accounts

Small steps add up to journeys, small savings can add up to early retirement if handled well.

Although nobody has tried it, I think it would be a valid theory

Now you know the price of a box of cigarettes in my country? its value is more than the paycheck here there is no way to save

Do people still smoke?

I know many who have stopped doing it for the cost of cigarettes others still do it the truth I do not know how they buy them

A black market?

If only I had the guts to remove telecoms from my life...

So many little "must have" BS things that people feel add quality but don't. I understand having a vice or two but it has definitely gone overboard.

I quit tobacco years ago, and started spending similar amounts on tools and shop gear. I have a very well stocked shed now.

I dare your colleague to spend their cigarette money on gear for a hobby, and see how it starts to add up:)

That is what mean. I used Steem as an example because well, we are here but, it can go into something that brings real quality of life. Paints, tools, a gym membership... anything else really.

ooohhh - or music gear!
Imagine spending thousands of Euros over a few years, collecting guitar geek gear, and finding out you sucked at it. Still looks like a win. As long as you don't light it on fire and inhale the fumes, almost ANYTHING is a win lol

If you look after the cents they will take care of the dolars. It is so true but if you have bad spending habits and don't realize it you end up living way beyond your means. Champagne tastes and beer money.

If I could get doctors bills back I would be happy :)

I do but it is private medical and you are paying for it anyway. We are currently in the self payment gap as we have spent too much already. The trick is to get through the paying part and then everyone has all the dentistry and eyes done at a much cheaper rate. Without private cover here you are basically screwed.

This is an excellent way to exemplify what the word cost really means, @tarazkp. In Venezuela, my country, the packet of cigarettes is worth much more than a month's salary, and here they do what you explain: they break the box to sell each cigar individually. This way, the seller has more, because he sells it by the unit. The same goes for beer and liquor. Retail is more expensive than per box. If we could save, if we could invest the money that is spent daily in superfluous things or vices, we could surely buy other more important things. I think it is part of an unspirited and very wasteful mentality. Happy Friday.

An easy way to increase profits = Make the servings smaller.

NIce! I am loving it. Please follow me, upvote my post and comment! I will do the same with you

Tobacco is expensive, and with respect to your health and the money you pay for it
