Celebrating Chinese New Year at Amarin Plaza, ฉลองตรุษจีนที่อมรินทร์พลาซ่า

(Chinese tourists are celebrating Chinese New Year in Bangkok)

This Friday 16th February is Chinese New Year's Day, so many Thai-Chinese are doing their shopping in preparation for their New Year celebration. More than half of the population in Thailand are partly Chinese as some of their ancestors were Chinese. The relationship between the Chinese and Thais have always been very closed as Chinese travelers, merchants and immigrants have been settling in Siam almost a thousand years ago.

As the Chinese came to live in Siam, they were quickly assimilated into Thai culture by changing their names into Thai names, learned Thai language and customs, their Confucius background also blended nicely with Thai and Buddhists' belief systems. Several Thai kings in the past were more Chinese looking than Thai as they had more Chinese ancestors than Thais or Siamese. Nowadays it is very difficult to find a pure Thai or Siamese family without at least one Chinese ancestor.

So, Chinese New Year celebration is taken seriously in some provinces of Thailand where there are big Chinese communities. This year is very special as I could see lots of Chinese tourists coming to Thailand to celebrate their Chinese New Year. I could hear people speaking Mandarin everywhere I go in central Bangkok. I think that it's time for me to have some Chinese lessons since I can see that the Chinese is expanding her trading influences across Asia. In the old days, we have to study English in order to have a good career and be successful in business. In the age of the Aquarius, I gather Chinese language is going to be very important means for career advancement and prosperity in business affairs.

วันศุกร์นี้เป็นวันตรุษจีน คนไทยเชื้อสายจีนกำลังยุ่งอยู่กับการจ่ายของสดของแห้ง สำหรับไหว้เจ้าต้อนรับวันขึ้นปีใหม่ คนจีนได้เดินทางมาค้าขายและมาเสี่ยงโชคในสยามเกือบพันปีแล้ว และได้นำความรู้แปลกใหม่มาสู่สยาม เช่น เครื่องถ้วยชามสังคโลก ดินปืน กระดาษและการทอผ้าไหม เมื่อคนจีนหนีร้อนมาพึ่งเย็นที่สยามก็ปรับตัวและทำใจให้เข้าเป็นดุจลูกบ้านที่ดี มีการเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นภาษาไทย และซึมซับวัฒนธรรมไทย หัดพูดภาษาไทย และรับความคิดแนวพุทธได้ดีเพราะ มีความกลมกลืนกับคำสอนของขงจื้อ เดี๋ยวนี้แทบจะหาครอบครัวไทยแท้ๆ ที่ไม่มีบรรพบุรุษเป็นคนจีนแม้แต่คนเดียวนั้น หายากเต็มที พระมหากษัตริย์ไทยบางองค์มีพระพักตร์ออกไปทางจีนมากกว่าไทยเสียอีก

การฉลองตรุษจีนจึงเป็นธรรมเนียมที่สำคัญมาก โดยเแพาะในจังหวัดที่มีชุมชนคนจีนโบราณอยู่มาก ปีนี้เราคิดว่าเป็นปีที่พิเศษ เพราะมีนักท่องเที่นวจีนมาฉลองตรุษจีนที่เมืองไทยมาก เดินไปที่ไหนในใจกลางเมืองก็ได้ยินแต่คนพูดภาษาจีนกลาง เห็นที่จะต้องเรียนภาษาจีนแล้วเรา สมัยก่อนทุกคนต้องพยายามเรียนภาษาอังกฤษเพื่อความก้าวหน้าและโอกาสในการทำงาน แต่ปัจจุบันภาษาจีนกำลังกลายเป็นภาษาสำคัญในการทำงานและประกอบธุรกิจในอนาคต จีนกำลังแผ่ขยายอำนาจทางเศรษฐกิจไปทั่วทุกประเทศในเอเซียแล้ว
