Long Distance Wireless Charging One Step Closer To Reality

The consumer electronics space has, for the past few years, visibly stagnated as far as breakthrough innovation is concerned. That is not to say that we are not making progress, it’s just that for many years now, it has been an evolutionary progress instead of a revolutionary one.

Technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligences’ application in consumer devices and some other breakthrough technologies are in the works but it will be quite a while before our lives become significantly easier thanks to these.

But what almost everyone would like to see being developed, and that too asap, would be in an area that has been the reason for literally everyone’s frustration.

I am talking about battery and recharging technology. How many times do we struggle on a daily basis to keep all of our devices charged? Too many times to be fair. While battery tech may still be many years to see any breakthroughs, we might be on the verge of a major recharging technology.

Long Distance Wireless Charging

You might be thinking what in the world I maybe talking about as wireless charging has been around for many years now. Well, let me just say that what we have grown accustomed to calling wireless charging, is actually induction charging.

It is a brilliant marketing trick to call it wireless to get people to buy into it. But the current wireless technology is no more wireless than an ethernet cable connected to your laptop for internet access. We wouldn’t call wifi, wifi if we had to place a device on the router, would we?

But imagine being able to charge your phone from across the room, without ever using a cable. Just like how we access wifi on our laptops across great distances.

Wouldn’t that solve all our problems if our devices are able to continuously charge and be fully charged as soon as we use some of the power?

FCC Approves Energous’ Wattup Technology

Wattup Technology is a power-at-a-distance wireless charging technology by a company called Energous. It also happens to be the first such system to be approved by the FCC back in December.

Right now, the charging system can charge devices only up to 3 feet away, but at least that’s a start. The company eventually plans to scale this up to 15 feet, which will really be something.

For those of you fearing the effects of radiation, fear not. The tech transfers power at a level much lower than that is already approved for smartphones. So, it will be pretty safe to use.

Last year, Energous was reported to be working with one of the largest tech companies in the world and we can only hope that it was either Apple or Samsung because those guys can really push a technology to mainstream in a matter of months. I just can’t wait to get my hands on this charging solution to make my life just that much easier.

Yeah, I know right!!

Wooww will be great this new technology friend, congratulations for this great content, greetings.

Indeed.

Sounds great, hope Samsung brings out this technology first. As an Samsung user i know how frustrating it can get when you want to use your device but your charging cable is plugged in and makes it rather uncomfortable as well.

I think that is true for any smartphone. Difficult to use when plugged in. So, let's hope that someone brings this to market soon.

Awsum it will b very much usefull for charging

sauravrugta how much distance will this charger work for charging?

I've mentioned it in the post. Right now the 3 feet one has gotten approval.

This quote just summarily lighten and alley my fears
You are awesome @sauravrungta

Thanks for the kind words :)

I am engineering student and also working for 3 months to avail this wireless technology..

Everything in this world will be wireless in coming 5-10 years...

Yeah! And I can't wait for that future :D

it will have both positive and negative impacts..
