Contrary to popular belief, the world today doesn't just revolve around the sun but majorly revolves around data and how it is managed. With our world evolving at a very fast pace due to recent technological advancements, Data has been a requisite tool that has majorly influenced this evolution. Data has and will always be the reason why Google, Facebook and the likes rake in billions of dollars annually. These top companies exploit users data on daily basis and use these valuable resources to their own advantage with no consent at all from the main owners of these data; Users. These activities however raises big questions which have been left unanswered for decades now.

Questions Like?

• How does users daily activities on the internet generate large revenue for these top organisations?
• Could this be extensively considered as Data Appropriation?
• Are these activities done Ethically?

You would agree with me that without an indepth analysis being carried out on these big questions rocking the data industry today, we wil only end up with more unsolved questions with little or no progess on the way forward.

Have you ever experienced a situation while surfing on the internet before? Maybe while reading an article or going through recent news a blog, you notice an ad being displayed at a specific section of the page showing an image of a T-shirt or pair of shoes you've recently dreamt of acquiring?
I'm sure you were left stunned at how this was possible and probably spent hours pondering on how those ads sites got to know what you are interested in.
There is no long equation, neither is there a long scientific thesis to prove this, but just a simple explanation to the whole puzzle.
You will be shocked to know that most sites we visit store valuable informations on various activities we perform on them. Valuable data on your hobbies, what you like, marital status, religion, health status to name a few, are stored and sold to these ad companies. If you're getting to know this for the first time, i'm sure this little piece of information is making you go ballistic.

(Taking facebook as a case study) Lets dive in!

I would love to create a simple scenerio to give an insight of how much these top companies make by feeding off users data.
Recent statistics shows that facebook has over 2 billion users and estimating a simple fragment of each users' data is valued at approximately $0.20. Assume 20% of the total facebook users are targeted for a particular ad campaign. If my calculation is done correctly, it shoes that Facebook will earn over $85million from just one ad campaign. These mind-boggling figures will only multiply if we all assume the same thing is done for about 100 more campaigns.

I'm sure we now have an idea of how much these firms earn by feeding off users private data without any form of consent or compensation. These top firms perforn these unethical acts to promote campaign for the sole purpose of making profit for themselves to the detriment of the main people whose private data are meant to be protected.
After this survey, you will agree with me that the the major question to be asked should be those which have been highlighted above but the big question to be asked should be:
