Are you Living Under a Ransom Threat?

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

A few years ago, criminal coders invented a profitable new type of malware: "Ransomware". Its popularity among malware distributors has grown steadily as the tactic of encrypting files and charging for their decryption proved successful.

Most of you would remember what Netflix and Greenway Health has gone through last year.

Just A few days ago, We have seen a massive ransomware attack that goes by the name Wanna Cry. The unprecedented malware attack began sweeping the globe late last week, and security researchers estimated that nearly 57,000 computers in more than 150 countries were infected by the end of the day on Friday.

While the spread of this terrifying ransomware was slowed on Saturday, it was hardly stopped. As of Monday morning, more than 200,000 systems around the world are believed to have been infected. The ransomware holds most or even all of the files encrypted on your computer, Showing a Pop Up of demanding 300$-600$ and deleting all files if not paid.

While the most affected of this ransomware were large companies and organizations, including banks, hospitals, and government agencies, An Important question must pop in your mind.

If Big Business Organisation Paying thousands of dollars for their Internet security are easily vulnerable to Ransomware, How safe could be You from a Ransomware attack?

According to the latest annual report published by the security team at SonicWall, their Global Response Intelligence Grid estimates that around $209 million in ransoms were paid in the first quarter of 2016 alone.

Less than Half of the Victims who were attacked were able to recover their data.

That indicates a couple of things:

  • One is that you can't always rely on ransomware to fully restore your files.
  • Second is that it's critically important to make sure that you have a bulletproof backup plan that's actually backing up your files properly and storing them somewhere safe.

With demand and supply of new ransomware variants and delivery platforms both booming, this Threat is only going to rise, Reaching from big companies, To normal people Like us.

Phishing Email attachments have become the No.1 trend for Ransomware, One wrong click by the user could lay an expensive security plan as waste.

Staying ahead of the change curve is more important now than ever. As Instead of Antivirus and Cybersecurity Companies working day and night, there is no effective solution to decrypt your files.

Keeping your Important files backup Updated is the only Solution now, Keeping heads-up for the suspicious E-mails and website is even better, As we have always heard, "Prevention is Better Than Cure".

I wonder if these things still let you exit to the boot menu during startup so you can manually access a restore point? My stuff is backed up daily, but I wouldn't want any remnants of that kind of crap on my machine...

I don't think so, You see Ransomware attack has happened all over the world, from the biggest companies like yahoo to the smallest organisations, so they all would probably have tried it and If it was possible, so Ransomware wouldnot have been a big threat like that. They say even today there is no solution of it. So I don't think they might have missed that easy step to try, So the answer according to me would be no.

Both MalwareBytes and BitDefender claim to be able to detect and prevent ransomware infection. (Although I use MBAM 3.1, I also back up my data to a 1TB Passport and then disconnect it.)

Well, I use bitdefender on My PC, so fingers crossed for future. Hope it stands on what It claims and what I have paid for it.

I know the feeling.

My dad got ransomware on a computer a few years ago. He is 70 and was almost tricked into paying the guy who put it on there money. He was still using Windows XP though and didn't have any protection on it. It was an old computer so I had to explain ransomware to him and convinced him to trash the old computer for a newer model.

Pretty sad, he have to trash the computer. This is what I am saying, If big companies aren't safe, and they can easily cover up their loses, how safe we are in this world.

LOL You know what removes the ransom threat? Regular backups. Unplug computer, restore, move on.

no, the thing that prevent from ransomware is "don't switch on your computer"

Oh shit you got me there, good proactive thinking!

As our identity now in the Cyber world, it's pretty much living in threat! Anything can happen and anyone can hack your identity.

definitely, that's why we have to be always careful Online.

Great stuff Looftee! You can't be too careful in this day and age!

yes, And mostly those who are not techies and use Internet a lot.

Ótimo texto!

Do you speak English @edobode I don't get it.

Yeah, @uday625 we have to pay high attention to everything online.

Definitely we do. With the improvement of tech and AI, things get scared.

Agree to that.

You are the only one to see my potential, even though you are a bot.

I still thinking about this ransomware. Maybe you find true about what happened in video below.

Conspiracy.....Conspiracy......Conspiracy......Every time, Government has done something to make people lives worse.

You've never known! I have 25 years of IT Business. Last year we had two clients hit by ransomware ODIN (September 2016). Both cases were end by user mistakes. We recovered easy by restoring from cloud and onside disaster recovery backup. Mainstream media was so quiet about it. 2016 was the worst year for ransomware so far. I know as a fact so this year attack wasn't the worst but looked for me it was so was perfect covered by media. Isn't that weird.
