Smart Tech of the Young and Older
Smart technologies have come into consumer household over the last decade with greater integration as time progresses. Where one may have glossed over smart tech as a novelty feature in the home for turning off the lights, services and features have come a long way. With this progression, utility has appealed to a wider demographic much beyond the flashy tech geeks who want the latest and greatest gadgets at home. Smart tech helps people to realise efficiency, safety and general increased quality of life. The smart life improves the lives of many, from young to senior age groups. While the younger target market will always be in view for new products coming onto the market, there is an undeniable presence in the older age groups.
Senior consumers are very much with technology adoption, living through the digital age is an inevitable adaptation that makes the general population easier to introduce new technology concepts to. Older age groups will only grow as their peers, family and media consumption encourage the use of smart home technology. Less screen time is perhaps a greater appeal for the older demographic, voice control technology and better accessibility in technology solutions are helping adoption in the older market audience. My own grandparents frequently make use of their Google Home and it’s certainly easier to setup and explain usage in comparison to a desktop or mobile phone app that requires a little more leg work to get going.
Smart home tech continues to grow and where products can introduce greater savings such as energy consumption configuration or safety in the way of security surveillance and doorbells, older target markets will be welcoming. Simplicity and streamlined setup processes are a focus for many companies, people do not want to spend countless hours learning and fiddling with convoluted configurations. Modern smart home tech is evolving into an all-encompassing monitoring system that is connected to a number of sensors to make homeowners aware where there may be problems. With further integration and streamlining, buying a new house with a full smart home monitoring system in new builds may become an expectation that the real estate market will have to leverage to make buying or renting more attractive for the modern-day boomer or senior.
