A little personal vision
The world of video games is a magical world that transports us to virtual dimensions. When we decide to embark on an adventure with a character we get so involved with the one we live the stories as if they were real, the game moves our emotions as if it were real life, we can rejoice, regret and even go through all those wonderful worlds that the developers put at our disposal.
I was particularly fond of the Final Fantasy saga of SQUARE ENIX. I have followed it and seen how it has evolved as well as video game technology. As we progressed with more defined graphics I felt more and more like the main character. The one that I most enjoyed was the FFXII, not only for the good graphics, but for the enormous amount of worlds and available. In addition to the huge variety of objects that could be collected, especially rare objects that have a lot of value within the game. Until one day, after having done feats to get huge amounts of guiles (currency of the game), when I finally had in my inventory the most amazing objects, I was about to finish the story of the game. Then I felt uncomfortable and I noticed the following:
After you have finished the game the only thing you get is the satisfaction of having lived the story of the game, but what is the meaning of the rare items if you can still live the story without them, plus the best items are obtained when everything is already ending, then you can’t enjoy them.
As you focus so much on the game you feel that the items you get there are your property, but after you finish the game you lose them, so you wonder if it was worth the time to search for them. Once I have accumulated so many objects and coins that I get excited about how I could change my life with the only possibility of trading them in the real world.
Playing eventually is just entertainment, but when a game becomes addictive we want to spend all our time living in the virtual world, however this is not productive in the real world as we only burn time without getting rewarded for it, the only ones who received benefits in the real world were the companies that developed the games.
A market that economically only benefits video game companies
For the world of video games there are only two fundamental users, the developer and the player. Between one and the other the video game companies have appeared, these companies hire the developer who for a salary develops the game, the company sells millions of copies of the game developed obtaining enormous wealth, the player buys the video game but in the end will only get entertainment.
At first, video games were sold to every player and he only enjoyed the virtual world and the pre-developed story of the game. Then it evolved into multiplayer games becoming so viral and productive for the video game industries that huge amounts of online games began to emerge. Selling the game installer didn't seem like enough profit for the big industries, so they created markets within the video games to be able to sell users rare items and assistive devices including game coins. These items are bought with real money, however the player cannot sell items from the game in exchange for real money. The only beneficiaries again are the big companies because the player buys an object with real money but has no property over it.
