Will We Have Self-Repairing Cities In The Future?

A group of scientists, engineers, and council-members, have been busy working together to develop the concept of self-repairing cities.

Researchers from University College London and Leeds University have also been working on the technology that's going to help self-repairing cities to become a reality sometime in the near future.

Essentially, what they aim to do is have drone robots help repair infrastructure issues, by examining where there are spots that need attention and then using drone robots to repair the roads at night in order to minimize traffic disruption.

The team includes researchers from several different schools who have been working on the initiative, along with the Leeds city council.

Ultimately, they want to use drone robots to fix roads because there is clearly a need in this area. The government has also claimed that they don't have the funds to repair the roads and there is plenty of work to be done.

It's estimated that it would take at least $9 billion or more to repair the roads in the UK and it would take roughly 14 years to complete the task.

The UK isn't the only area where there are infrastructure problems either, as the U.S. is facing it's own $1 trillion dollar dilemma with the same failing roads, bridges, and more.

Researchers involved with the self-repairing city concept agree that the public will need to be on-board with the initiative, they'll need to be okay with drones flying around analyzing roadways and deploying solutions to try and fix the problem.

They also know that they are going to need support from authorities and that's why they've been working together to try and bring this concept to life. There are also other jurisdictions that have been pursuing the same goal, looking for various ways that drones might be able to be used in various communities.

As a part of their present objective for self-repairing cities, researchers have been investigating the social and economic impacts of robot road repair and they've allegedly been including policy makers in the process. They've been working on this plan for several years already and they expect that within the next few years that they will begin testing their robots on the streets in the UK, further exploring whether or not their idea of a self-repairing city could become a reality.

But we can already see drones being used around the US and elsewhere. Drones are being used to help clean up after car crashes by assisting teams when they need to gather data about a certain accident before the roadway can be cleared. The drones are able to do this much faster than traditional methods and we might soon start to see drones and robots being used much more frequently worldwide to help with cleaning-up roads, repairing them in the night, and much more.

The original mechanical concept of this comes from something that we call fractal robotics or modular robotics. It is inspired of by the self healing nature of an organic life form that allows to build and repair at the same time without having to directly utilize resources from outside the ecosystem.

Before they scaled this idea to the city, it was actually limited to within factories, where robots will completely take over the manufacturing process to the point that they would have the ability to repair damaged parts and good in the warehouse without requiring even maintenance.

From the perspective of a patent researcher, i can confirm that!
I had a couple of researches, especially in the last year, concerning
assistent drones.
Also "personal" ones, in connection with your vehicle.

Very useful to speed up repair if there is road damage in the middle of the city. Hopefully soon come true and all will benefit. Thank you for sharing a very interesting article. Best wishes always for you @doitvoluntarily.

Thought provoking post, thanks for that! Automation of repair should end up being a significant gain in efficiency for a lot of operations in all kinds of industries.

Couldn't the people just go in the drones and we let nature reclaim the roads and bridges?

I can really see this happening @doitvoluntarily , drones are being used more and more in many different ways on a daily basis also if the drones can find issues before they become huge problems it will save the tax payers a lot of money in the end! great post, thanks for sharing with us. upped earlier now resteemed!✌👍👍👍💕

this is actually really exciting. With the improvement of technology it is not unimaginable to see structures that auto repair themselves. What an idea!!

#upvoted and #resteemed.

Anything is possible, look the cities now are designed to self destruct... so why not self repair?

Ooh, in the US, maybe Domino's will seek to spread out from paving the roads to monitoring them too...or maybe little Caesars will get in on the action! ;*

Very exciting times to observe the transformative ability of these technologies to help humans evolve our daily lives. While it may threaten some authorities' current positions, they, too, are human (really!) and stand to enjoy the fruits of the efficiency as well.
