GDC Update - Going Rogue with Stencyl!steemCreated with Sketch.

in #teamwork-fail7 years ago (edited)

You know what? I've 'had it' and I'm not going down without a fight!

For those who may have missed it, a few days ago I shared a lament about how the two persons who I'd been thrown together with to form a team have been a total let down.

With a November 17th deadline looming I'd all but given up.

Even as I continued to attempt to motivate the team members to actually 'do something' I grew ever more frustrated with what I had to work with. A team I'd been trying to get to 'move' from day 1.

I was consigned to giving up.

And then I snapped.

And loaded up Stencyl.

And started working on building the game myself...

...I'm nuts... but I think that I might be able to pull it off...

It'll be uglier. It'll be limited to Stencyl's capabilities...

But it would be a game that kinda works with zero input from the "team".

And I want to teach them a lesson...

Doing so Shall Not be a Cake Walk

While I do have a little bit of experience using Stencyl, I'd learnt it during the course of the Global Game Jam earlier this year. Since Unity is the gold standard in gaming I allowed myself to focus upon other kinds of learning - and this did not change for the Game Design Contest that started all the way back in July.

Since I 'thought' that I was dealing with a programmer and an artistically inclined fellow - I resolved to focus upon the menial things like tilesets first - and made the mistake of trusting that the programmer had Unity covered.

Well.. here I am... more than 3 months later, feeling older.

The odds of success are admittedly slim - but I've a pretty good idea of what needs to be done (if not a great idea of how to go about certain things).

  • Load Tileset that I made (Sure - it could have been much better fitting - especially laterally, but I consider it a learning experience (lesson learnt: Don't use vectors to create texture. Its murder on computer resources))

  • Build level one using it as a baseline, with a few third-party images thrown in for completion, based upon the level designs that I made with the help of a spreadsheet.

  • Resize, and set up character sprite animations. Hope they won't need tweaking.

  • Delve into getting the level and character mechanics right.

  • Focus upon a slim but effective User Interface that I'd already had a couple of ideas for.

  • Implement a start screen - along with a one-person credits screen (why not!?).

  • Build and improve from there.

So this is the challenge that I'm setting for myself. It would be ideal to have the game ready for the deadline - but if I have it ready for the demo the following week - I'll also be happy.

...I still think I'm nuts

Well - thats what I'm thinking about for the moment. Do you have any comments or feedback? Perhaps you yourself are a developer who could spur me on? Do get in on the discussion down below! :c)

Also, if you found this post interesting and would like to share this with your followers and friends then a resteem is always appreciated.

Sincerely,

Aak and you shall receive! Although I'm still not sure how I feel about resteeming - I prefer the way busy.org handles it.

Back on topic - You can do it! And by it I mean whatever you want to do in this life 😉

I'm along for this ride - practically learning how to make a video game from you. I've only ever heard of unity - but I've played quite a bit of steam-shovelware from bundles, I do enjoy 2d platformers 😀 could be Stencyl and me are closer than I know 😂

Curiosity is gnawing at me. How does busy.org handle it? :c)

Oh I've dug-into the task hand and shall be ensuring a great effort of it - while ignoring the little 'what the hell am I doing?' voice nagging at the back of my mind. ;c)

Oh this isn't going to be on the same level as anything you'd find on steem. I just want to make sure that I have something to show for myself since its clear to me that the "team" care not one iota about earning placement (quote: "We'll get third place no matter what" - yeah - turnout was bad but I didn't join for a ribbon).

Thank you, both for your up-vote as well as your encouragement @ecoinstant. ^_^

Third place 😂😂😂

Busy puts resteems into the feeds but when you go to individual person's blog there are two seperate streams for personal blogs and resteems.
