4 Ways To Improve Productivity - My Personal Review for 2018

in #teammalaysia6 years ago

Now let us talk about self-productivity that had been ‘haunting’ me for quite a while. I am highlight 4 key points that I will be discussing that relates closely to self-productivity.

Not wanting to face my imperfect self.

Gonna be honest to myself that the thing with me being reluctant in doing the productivity chart for myself is that I don’t like to see myself wasted and doing things like scrolling Instagram, watching videos on YouTube, Facebook, reading mangas, chasing dramas, stuck with some games and so on (you know where I am getting at). I think I have two extreme me where one is striving for success while the other me is about enjoying the moment and chill. While in the light, I always put up my best to hustle and achieve different milestones. On the other side of the coin, I am another typical lazy, wasted guy that loves to indulge in some unhealthy mind food (overdosage).

Who would want to see this side of ourselves? I guess no one and this includes me. Despite knowing that, it is still very ‘enjoyable’ to be in such a hedonistic lifestyle without the need to use that much brain power and commitment to face the challenges. With the limitless supply of contents on social media and other websites, there is just no end in consuming all those contents while we are doing nothing for ourselves. After consuming, I also felt depressed sometimes and found that going out to exercise or chat with some friends makes me felt better, more fulfilling.

Justifying time cost.

After reading several business and management books, it always comes down to a few jeez that will bring success. One of it is definitely knowing our own time cost. How much should we earn per hour? I still remembered the time I worked as a promoter for Carlsberg and waiter for Haagen Dazs, the hour rate is about RM5 per hour. Then, as a personal tutor, the hour rate can hit around RM20 per hour (but that includes preparation work besides the session). To be a graduate architect who earns around RM20 as a junior staff. I even calculate the time cost for me to write on Steemit and how much I am expecting myself to perform to manage my account as well as the community. The average total that I come out with is just around RM7 per hour which is measly. With the Steem price at all-time low, the income will drop to an insignificant RM2 to RM3 per hour.

Nonetheless, I always believe in compounding effect whereby when I slowly build myself to become the top performers in the field, which is the top 20 percent. The rate will be at an entirely different level whereby I would expect it to double to around an average RM15 per hour which is not a bad side hustle for writing. Plus, this will get even more lucrative when it comes to organizing a community and empowering more people by curating more contents and organize more interesting activities.

Discipline and consistency.

Discipline is one of the most critical elements for good life quality. Before being an adult, I was a believer of freedom whereby we should not be confined by some ‘habits’ and lifestyle that we need to do it repeatedly every day. When I experienced more about life and reached my adulthood which is around 20 something, I started to realize the importance of having discipline in life. The more discipline I have in a certain area, the better I can achieve in that area. This is something that I cannot comprehend at the very beginning but slowly understand the mechanism behind it.

Discipline comes with a cost of confining we within a designated lifestyle that is created by ourselves. With that restriction, we have more certainty in our lives and have our focus set straight. Without discipline, we are always during confusion as there are just so many dreams and attraction from the outside world that need our attention. There is no way for us to go for every desire of our own and let ourselves go loose. Eventually, this will not bring us to any conclusion nor success but making us even more confused and depressed with our life.

When I talk about discipline, it refers to different micro-habits that I set for myself to follow and be consistent in doing so. There are some that I successfully made into a habit, but some still need time to adjust and readapt. Here are some of the micro-habits that I refer to:

  1. Jotting down daily tasks with time spent as quantifiable measurement [15 mins]
  2. Jotting down daily expenditure with the amount spent [10 mins]
  3. Exercise at least 1 hour per week and keep the record (no matter what kind of sport, which I am going for a swim like twice per week to hit that milestone) [60 mins]
  4. Jotting down my weight every day [1 min]
  5. Drink at least 250ml of water when I wake up [1 min]
  6. Listen to at least half an hour of learning podcast every day [30 mins]
  7. Jot down what I had learned with @esteemapp (maybe with my alt account) from the podcast [30 mins]
  8. Make myself an OKR table for me to review daily, weekly and monthly. [5 mins]
  9. Read up and make notes on my professional knowledge every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (to spend at least 1 hour each day for that) [180 mins]
  10. Read news from The Star app every morning during breakfast and during lunch. [10 mins]
  11. Meditate by copying mantra before sleep. [15 mins]

There are more habits that I will be listing out later on and identify the amount of time needed for that habit, the smoothness of continuity for the habit to integrate into my lifestyle and also which habit can be adjusted to make me more productive. Without a doubt, having the hassle to fix my life in such a way is always a pain in the ass. However, I do think that once I get used to such routine, my life will be a lot more productive and I spend most of the time on creating value for my own body, my partner, my family and even for my mind. With that, I do think I can really enjoy life after a year of practice which is why 2019 will be an important year for me to evolve. I really look forward to how I can change myself and get to a higher height.

Goal setting.

Well, goal setting is all about listing out our dreams and see which is the short-term ones that are more easily achieved and the long-term ones that can be achieved by segmenting them into smaller ones. Each goals will be written into the OKR as mentioned before in the habit making section whereby I can keep track on how much progress I had made for each goals I had made for myself. This also ensures that I am moving in the right direction as I am always influenced by the ‘new stuff’ that appear suddenly like how Steemit comes into my life a year plus ago. Now, it has become part of my goal to achieve something through Steemit. This is the serendipity that I am looking for, in a good way and it could become an asset for me in the future.

In terms of my goals, I would ultimately want to turn myself into a financially free person whereby I have no need to worry about my cash flow. Meaning to say, the income I am generating is more than the expenditure I am having every month. Plus, the different hour rate for me in different commitment will leverage my time for me to do something I love, like going travel and seek for more business opportunity while enjoying the moment with my loved ones, especially @enjiliew and my family. Besides, @enjiliew and I had a dream of setting up a charity that could help both the strays and also the autistic which had a close relation to our life as well. We believe that by helping more, we could create more value that could benefit all of us, including our family members too.

Once again, I am always trying a different approach and change my habits (that are not healthy and giving me any value besides short-term satisfaction). Like how Einstein put it, doing the same thing again and again, is insanity. Therefore, I always believe that change is the constant and we should keep those that make us better and sacrifice those that seems fuzzy and comfy at the moment but not creating any value for us in the future.

Wow I never sat down and thought about time cost. As a working adult, that is one of the most important thins we have to improve; especially those who constantly move around from place-to-place for work (ie: digital nomads). Thanks for the eye-opener @kimzwarch

Hey long time no see @normalbro! How’s thing going for you in Texas? Ya, that is important as we need to justify how much time do we need to spend to sustain our living per month, a quarter or maybe a year. That will give us a perspective on what should we take on and earn while putting the unnecessary and less efficient away.

I'm not back yet. I'll be there at the end of next month. Can't wait to get back to Austin!!

I see. For Christmas! Take care man and have a smooth trip back :)
