Let's do Science Experiment together

Little Vinnie is 6 this year. She came home with a set of materials yesterday. After dinner time, she couldn't wait any longer. Excitedly she showed me her book and the set of materials she brought home.

She is learning Science in school and this is one of the experiment in her book. Her teacher gave her the set of materials and she can do it at home.

Ok, let's see what we have here. 5 plastic cups, 4 packets of salt, 1 ice cream stick and 1 plastic cube block.

The 4 packets of salt has different amount of salt. Vinnie said her teacher told her to put water in all the cups and then add salt into the cup accordingly. Each packet of salt is being labelled and so does the cup.

Since she knows what to do, I just let her conduct her own experiment.

Yup, she had to empty the 4 packets of salt into the 4 cups of water.

Then stir, stir, stir...

Done stirring! I ask her what to do next. She said put the block into the cup. The block is going to float. There is one cup of water where the block is going to fall down under the water. I ask her which one, she said it's the one without any salt. All the one with salt the block will float.

Even though the teacher had told her the theory, but she still like to confirm it herself. She was trying her best to keep the block under the salt water with the help of the ice cream stick.

But no matter how hard she tried, the block just won't wanna sit still under the salt water. It kept floating back up.

This is the only cup of water which the block will sit nicely under the water. Yup, the cup with just plain water, no salt.

Vinnie may not fully understand the whole theory of the density but she knows that things will float in salt water and will sink in plain water. And she had a great time playing with the salt and water. 😁
