Twelve Months Driving Our Mitsubishi iMiEV. [My Electricity Spend Since Owning My EV!]

Electric vehicle ownership is fraught with dangers. Explosions, death and destruction should all be expected.

As if.

It's been just over twelve months of electric vehicle ownership, so I decided to get my records out and do the sums on my trusty calculator [galaxy s8]. Since buying the imiev, I've been measuring how much electricity I've used at home when charging. My records consist of a few scraps of paper and a pencil next to my powerpoint. It's not high tech.

Fast chargers are FREE.

Normally, I try to top up at the public fast charging station (because it's free) and also quite convenient as it's at Hayley's place of work which is just 1.7km (about a mile) from our house. Rad!

Indeed, it was one of the reasons we bought the car. We basically weren't going to have to pay for the fuelling up of our car - petrol or otherwise. Previously, we were spending around $40 per week on petrol for our early 2000's model Mitsubishi Lancer. That stopped as soon as we bought the imiev.

Show me the evidence.

The sums are in. I put in 715 kWh of electricity over 12 months of ownership. Now, I didn't separate what was offpeak and what wasn't so I'll give you the range of what it cost us.

If all was offpeak, at 13.7c per kWh, the total came to $98.03.

If all was peak electricity, at 27.5c per kWh, the total came to $196.79.

Realistically, it's about $130 total. That's $2.50 a week for fuel costs for the car.

Sadly, electric vehicles are not widely available in Australia [still] unless you have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on a Tesla in which case you couldn't care less about your electricity bill.

That fact doesn't really affect us anymore. Economically, at least. Let's hope in the future that changes, because we need to rethink fossil fuel usage among the population. I can only gloat for so long about my savings.

All the best,

Nick.

Oh nice. That is way cheaper than petrol. I drove one of Ergon Energy's electric cars up in Cairns one time for work. It was great. I really liked it. Perhaps the crypto Lambo dream should be replaced with a Tesla.

Yah. The fuel aspect is just the tip of the electric iceberg.

Glad you enjoyed it. Was it a Nissan Leaf? They're not a bad car either. I do appreciate all the effort Nissan has put into EV exposure and education. They are very committed to the cause.

I would like a Tesla, but I feel like I wouldn't want to give up the imiev. She's an adorable car.

I'm pretty sure it was something they'd half built themselves. They were doing a bunch of things like testing load on the network etc.

Ooh that's ace! My partner's dad works at Wollongong uni in engineering and they have their own undergrad electric race car team. Pretty cool stuff.

Where do you find the high speed free chargers ? is there a website ?

I use the plugshare app.

If you're in Australia, most are free. The one near me is the Wollongong uni, SBRC Building DC fast charger. You just need your chargepoint swipe key tag.

thanks ...

found ones near me...so I apply for the swipe key tag on the website and they send it to my home ?
