What is the capital of Australia?

Having lived overseas for a over a decade now (holy crap....), I've become used to the fact that most people think that Sydney is the capital of Australia.

Sure, Sydney has the greatest profile of all the Australian cities. It has picturesque views, a lovely waterfront and world famous landmarks in the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Most people when they visit, will land here as it also has the largest and busiest airport.

However, it is all just glitz and glamour. I lived in Sydney for a few years. It's okay, if you are a millionaire and can afford to live in the most expensive waterfront areas. However, for most of us, that dream is for the privileged important people.....

... and it isn't the capital! That would be like choosing a reality TV star to be the face of your nation.

How about Melbourne?

Yes, I know this isn't Melbourne. If you haven't noticed, this is a fairly loose article!

You have got to be kidding! Australia is well known around the world as the place of endless sunshine and perfect beaches! Why would we choose a city that is perpetually overcast and has the water shipped direct to the beaches from the Antarctic?

Besides, Melbourne doesn't want to be Australian anyway. When they grow up, they want to be European...

Canberra

Canberra is the capital of Australia. It is a perfect, idyllic small town (around 400,000 people) that was designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin after an international competition for ideas. It was chosen as the site of the capital following Federation in 1900 as a compromise between the largest colonies led by cities of Sydney and Melbourne. The plan involved geometric patterns (circles, hexagons and triangles) that connected various important geographic locations in the area.

The town is designed to try and mix residential and commercial zones, and to also try and mix social housing with private housing. This is an attempt to mix different stratas of society and to try and form small communities within each suburb that are centered around a small commercial zone.

It is also home to our Parliament House and major National monuments like the War Memorial, the Governor's Residence, The Australian Mint, The National Library and the National Galleries. Most of the various governmental departments are also based here, although they do often have smaller offices in the major cities as well. There is also the Australian National University, which is a leader in academic studies and research across all disciplines.

The population has a large proportion of public servants and students, which contributes to a high level of education, a low unemployment rate, younger population and higher average income. The planning of the city has been well managed, leading to many green areas of bushland intermingled throughout the city.

I spent many years studying here, and it was by far my favourite place to live in Australia (I had lived also in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney). Definitely worth a look if you are visiting Australia, the monuments and landmarks are really quite interesting to visit, it is only a short flight (or a 3 hour bus/drive) from horrible smoke of Sydney.

Nice article, is there interesting things to see on the 3 hour bus ride? Is it likely to end up like a 3 hour tour to Gilligan's Island? Just being silly. The picture makes it look like a real nice town, not to big, and not to small. Are there day trips available out of town, things to go see close by, after you wear out the monuments, and other tourista type stuff?

Nothing too interesting on the way there. But there are lots of little towns and vast tracts of bushland that I find nice!

When you have exhausted the monuments, there is again the close bushland. The town is just surrounded, and it is just normally about a maximum 30 minute walk to hit the edge of the bush. From there, there are great walks, and spots for camping and picnicking!

Australia is one of the places I always wanted to visit, especially after seeing Mad Max at the drive-in when it first came out. That was a long long time ago.

Mad max! A classic, but oddly enough I've only watched it recently. That is our landscape! Apocalyptic!

But really, there are great tracts of wild bushland and forests. It is a green that doesn't exist elsewhere. A green mixed with blue or gray.

Great post Bengy! I hadn't really thought about what was the capital of australia too much. I just thought it was Sydney because it's one of the most famous places if not the most famous of that country. I think the first time I heard about Sydney (Outside of Geography classes) was when I was watching Nemo and you can see the Opera house in the back in a certain part of the movie! I loved reading about these little facts I didn't know already, great post! Also, this image:

Ha ha! Love the photo, it does really look a bit like that! I'm glad you now know what the capital really is!
