Roasted and Toasted - A Tasteem Review
The first time I stepped foot in Roasted and Toasted, a small café that focuses on what we call ‘toasties’, was more than five months ago.
Having tried to order a Steak Canadian, and then being informed by the owner that their current stock was ‘stuck together’ and not fit for human consumption was hardly a good start.
Not willing to give up easily, I tried to order and alternative dish only to be told they, ‘had none left’
That day I had left disappointed and the owner probably more so.
Having extinguished most of the café’s in Rochdale, I figured to give Roasted and Toasted a second chance more recently.
...'even though it's freezing outside they leave the door open here, Rochdalian's are a hardy bunch'...
The interior is unassuming, with only THREE tables though it does boast an upstairs section.
Once again I tried to order a Steak Canadian and thankfully the owner didn’t seem to remember the older incident.
Sitting in the corner table I looked around at what I could see while waiting for the food.
The café is quite tidy and well maintained, despite being situated next to an ex-cinema turned pub that is frequented by the local pisshead crowd.
The outside 'Roasted and Toasted' wooden rotting sign is looking very ropey.
Some better design work may attract a different class of people that is if they exist in Rochdale.
...'this is the menu, there are not many choices'...
The toasty arrived sharply and looked reasonably appetising. The bread was wholemeal which is fine by me, though I wasn't given a choice of type.
A Steak Canadian is a very thin cult slice of steak sometimes delivered with sauce, or onions between two slices of bread, and in this case, toasted.
This one used regular sliced onions instead of the usual fried ones, but they looked nice enough. Some gooey cheese was oozing out of the slices and so I bit into it.
The result was good and overall positive though I have tasted better Steak Canadian’s from the nearby San Remo Café.
I’m not sure if cheese fits into this type of sandwich; it seems a good idea and almost comes off if one can overcome the strangeness.
The meat was nice, the usual thin type I would expect and tasty.
Only one other set of people entered the shop while I was there and sat at one of the other empty seats. It’s good to see others eat here too.
They also have a selection of cakes though I didn’t try any.
I have returned to Roasted and Toasted and ordered the same sandwich which speaks volumes.
If I don the doors more than once it's got my seal of approval.
£4.50 seems a decent deal for the sandwich I received, I didn't get a receipt on this occasion.
Given the lack of chains in the town centre, Rochdale does have a decent amount of independent cafe's and restaurants.
Some are terrible but Roasted and Toasted is not one of them and is worth a visit.

Pretty honest review. Though I'm not sure what I Canadian Steak is and I live in Canada.
I think it's a British term though I see it less as the years go by. When I was younger they were advertised much more.
That looks like a tasty sandwich!
One of the best things about toasted sandwich shops, are the names of them. I’ve seen the toast office, and my favourite just outside Cardiff was, the Holy cheesus.
I like how small the space is. It seem to be very intimate.
What a fantastic lunch spot

Thank you!
That toastie looks great, if a bit too much filling! Cheese and onion toastie on wholemeal is my favourite.
It was quite filling, I'm still unsure if cheese fits with this kind of sandwich. Given I have been back I suppose it does.
Those small cafes are always the best in my mind. It may get crowded at certain parts of the day but for the majority of the time they seem pretty empty. That is a tasty looking sandwich and not to mention on of those tasty treat to grab on the way out. Great review!!
Psst... add the #fff and you will be entered into Round 75 of the Food Fight 😜
Thanks, I'll be sure to use the #fff tag on future food reviews.
Only if you post them on Friday 😉 Feel free to edit the fff tag in and I will plug you into the contest. I will just do it anyway. 😜😜

Right-ho Friday's. I'll coincide my reviews on that day.
That looks like a really tasty sandwich to me. Without seeing the menu I am guessing it is probably the item I would have chosen as well. They must use something like sizzle steaks to make them if the meat was all stuck together the first time you went. I am glad the second (and third) time was better!
I'm finished in that town, so you won't be getting anymore Rochdale reviews now.. hehe.., well after the one I have left in the bag.
If it gets a repeat visit it must be not bad! Looks really nice! Especially that caramel shortcake!
After 8 months and reviewing every possible cafe in Rochdale, I have only one more to post. It's a good thing my contract is up and I'll be in a new town next year giving them crap about their food hehe...
Lol. You made the littlest hobo theme tune spring into my head there :0D
