Wong Kee (Den Haag, Netherlands): A Tasteem Review
This Chinese restaurant (Wong Kee, also known as Woeng Kee) in Den Haag is one of our long time favourites. We used to visit quite a lot when we lived very close by (and we used to get so much take-away, especially after the birth of our kids....), so much so that the owners knew us by sight... and our kids as well!
It is pretty hard to find decent Asian food in Europe, so when you find a place that is good... you stick to it! Sadly, we don't live so close anymore, and so it is not so often that we come here these days... Which is a pity, but also a huge cost saving!
The Space
Recently, the restaurant underwent a large renovation. There is not much that is different with the layout, but all the furnishings are much nicer than what was there beforehand...
However, it is a pretty popular place, and so expect it to be packed at the peak meal times. It's loud and busy! However, the staff will try and accomodate you ... but you might have to wait a little bit!
The Menu
We came at lunch time on the weekend (and it was packed...), which meant that we were ordering from the Dim Sum menu instead of the normal menu. Now, unlike other Dim Sum places, there are no carts going around the place (there just isn't enough room). In fact, you will be just writing the numbers of the dishes you want on a piece of paper and then handing it to the nearest wait staff member...
It's a bit of a different experience than the carts that go around showing off various goodies, however, it is a space related solution. The downside is that you tend not to deviate too far from the known dishes....
The Food
Like any Dim Sum lunch, there are half a million tasty little dishes... of which you will order way too much and be doggy-bagging half of it for the next few leftover lunches at home!
Fried balls of sticky rice filled with a small bit of mince filling. It is super tasty, but I always burn my tongue on the inside....
Chinese pancakes with chives... a hit with the kids... and me. When I visited China, I saw that there were quite a few places offering this for breakfast!
Fried crab sticks... nothing special!
Steamed chicken with a garlic and ginger sauce. The chicken itself is nothing special, but when you add the sauce... it is quite stunning. So much garlic.... so much ginger!
Prawns wrapped in a steamed rice pastry. It's okay, but I much prefer the ones with BBQ pork in it!
Steamed rice pastry with a prawn filling. It is one of the stock standard Dim Sum offererings... weirdly enough, this time it was a hit with the kids. Probably not the next time though...
Steamed egg sponge cake! This is my one of my favourites!
Sticky rice with chicken! Again, a favourite of mine... there is nothing better than unwrapping the vine leaves and getting that smell of the rice and chicken and various other fillings!
Kids.. dumplings... must have!
Steamed meatballs... it is a pretty weird concept to steam a meatball, but somehow... it works!
BBQ park Steamed buns! I would love these as a kid (I still do!). I would peel the cooked skin of the buns off the outside nad then slowly eat my way into the middle.... now my kids do that!
The Experience
This place is noisy and busy... and the food is great! I haven't found a better place in Den Haag for Chinese food (yet...), and so this is our go to place for that fix!
We have always loved this place, and so maybe I'm speaking from the heart rather than the head (or stomach...). However, it is where we always take friends if they are dropping by and we want to go out for Chinese food.
The staff are pretty efficient... and if they have time, they are also friendly... but quite often they are worked off their feet. They have quite a lot of staff on the floor... but it really is a hectic shuttling of food and dishes back and forth to and from the kitchen!
I love this place!

Yes, it does seem like you should go to the places that are completely full! They have the best food! Thanks for the curation!
I'll definately go visit there once I am in Den Haag, greetings from Amsterdam! Upvoted!
Ha... I think I recently bought some Amber, best of luck with the project!
You have some decent stuff in Amsterdam though!
Great post. That sticky rice is my favorite.
Always my favourite too!
Delicious, especially the Chinese pancakes with chives sounds interesting and different @bengy
Most dishes prepared above I have never seen over here, we do get Chinese perhaps I need to explore the menu a little bit more.
That is the difficult thing with doing the Dim Sum... people tend to stick with what they know, because everything looks strange! We try to try one new thing each time... sometimes it is good, sometimes... less so!

Steamed big meatballs are also one of the dimsum varieties.
