Ikaria; an Island Where People Forget To Die

We have all heard that joke where a man goes to his doctor and ask what he needs to do to live to be 100 years old.The doctor told him to give up eating meat, drinking alcohol, smoking, and sex.

The man was deep in thought and thanked the good doctor.As he was leaving he asked the doctor if that what will guarantee him 100 years and doctor replied,

"Maybe not, but it would surely feel like it."

Yeah, it is a corny joke but the point is many have always wanted to live for long.

But to the small island people of Ikaria in Greece, living to be 90 is something majority of the populace does. The island got its name from Icarus, the son of Daedalus in Greek mythology, who flew too close to the sun (against the father's advice and the wax in his wings melted and he fell down into the sea) who they believed landed in a sea close by.

The small beautiful Island is known for having a high number of very old people. Researchers have found that 1out of every 3 citizens of this island tend to live to be 90. They also tend to live ten years longer than most people in other places before developing heart disease.They also have lower cases of cancer and dementia.

An analysis of a researcher Dan Buettner show that people at the island reach 90 years two and half times (2x) faster than an average American.

Ikaria is part of the five blue zones area of the world.

What is the secret to their longevity?

Many of the residents say it is their lifestyle. They are happy people who have an active lifestyle, eat healthily, take naps, and take sips of plant-based wine. Stress had been known to produce cortisol a harmful hormone in very high or very low amount. So a life filled with stress and anger has long-term negative effects on the body.

But scientists and doctors from the University of Athens are now looking for a connection with between their longevity to their DNA. Also, there is a suspicion that there is natural selection at play due to the secluded nature of the Island.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs pronounced “snips”) are the most common kind of genetic variation among people. It is the basic block of a nucleotide which represents a difference in each DNA building block.Each SNP represents a difference in a single DNA building block, called a nucleotide. It could be recalled that centenarians share common SNP. From past research in centenarians, p21/
(CDKN1A-Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Inhibitor 1A) a gene which
is a stress-inducible senescence-associated cell cycle inhibitor. There are two alleles found to be missing. These alleles may be potentially bad for longevity, thus rare in centenarians.

A study was done in 2009 by researchers from the University of Athens, revealed that out of 1330 participants (699 women and 631 men) that 89 and 98 men and women respectively were above 80 years.

These old people have been found to be very active too.Their diets are also different from people from other places.

More than 50% of their calorie intake comes from fat – from which olive oil provides around half of this. They eat a lot of legumes (garbanzos, lentils, and black-eyed peas), potatoes and wild greens; additionally, they drink a lot of coffee and herbal tea. The islanders eat meat about every other day and notably, they eat fish only six to eight times per month. Moreover, they eat rarely pasta and grains, instead favouring a lot of fruits. Following on with the sweeter side of their diet – they very rarely eat ordinary sweets but like to sweeten their tea with local honey. Lastly, they do eat dairy products, but mainly from goat’s milk. To summarise, this is evidently an overall plant-based diet.

While the scientist are still figuring their secrets out, the beautiful people from Ikaria continue to live as they had forgotten how to die :)

I often see olive oil cited as being very healthy. What most people don't know is that they are not buying olive oil as it has been eaten for thousands of years. You all must have notice the word 'Virgin' on the bottle.

The elders you write of, I bet that if you could check, you would find they use unrefined olive oil from their own trees, or those of a neighbour.

'Virgin olive oil' gives the impression the oil is cleaner, healthier. However, I believe it is far less healthy, as much of what makes the oil healthy has been removed through 'refining'. Similar effects to honey being radurised.

People have used olive oil for at least two thousand years and it has always been known as being healthy for us, yet the corporate paid scientists come along and decide to filter out what has always been in olive oil, claiming that what they are removing is unhealthy, bad for us.

Who do I believe? I believe those countless generations who did not feel the need to refine the oil (men have known how to refine, to some degree at least, for as long as we have used olive oil, but they did not choose to do so).

btw- did you know that it is illegal to sell original olive oil that has not been processed? Seeing as to how food is being used to destroy our health, if I am offered the opportunity, I prefer to get my oil from the owner of the trees, unrefined - I'm happy to take my chances.

The idea of refining is to make products last longer not really for our health benefits. Then another is to make the food have a pleasing aesthetic look to it.

You made some great observation here, reason I still prefer my fruits fresh over all those natural fruit drinks with "no additives"

I did not know about the illegality of selling unrefined olive oil. I know in my country people prefer the refined rice over the local unrefined rice due to the way it looked like.But experts have talked a lot about the health benefits of those "unrefined" rice varieties.

Think that Ikaria is an island kind of isolated, people there are used to a more natural lifestyle, all this has to do with their longevity I guess.

Whatever benefit or problem,.. there are always a combination of factors but I think that one of the more obvious ones in this case would be.. as another comment mentioned- a degree of isolation from the mainstream world and of course the Mediterranean diet. In the US and many other highly populated places in the world now- "oils" have become a dirty word because manufactured/ modified plant oils are very harmful to health while being presented in a way that appears "healthy". But natural oils like olive oil and flax, which completely cured an autoimmune blood disorder that I encountered 15ys ago, saving me from butchery and ongoing drug dependence are among the most important foods that are missing in the pro-corporate "industrial diet" (what you'll probably buy at the grocery store). This is very likely the most significant cause of the un natural inflammatory conditions that are behind countless personal tragedies that we are all negatively effected by- directly or indirectly at first. The governments and so- called protective agencies are deceiving the majority of our populations and allowing big business to hijack food supplies. All it takes is some independent research (yours) to realize this. Most people however, will follow the pack, go with the flow toward illness rather than risk having to cope with awareness.

Thanks for this invaluable input to this subject of discussion. I agree with all of it, our over-dependence in over proceeded food is gradually killing us. Living a healthy life now requires a sort of going back to how our ancestors survived in year's on a natural diet and living a life devoid of most pollutant.

I'd be interested to know more about the studies done on these people. I kind of feel studies like that often miss the point though they look at natural selection and survivor bias and a lot of other things when really all they need to look at is the facts on the ground ie these people are living longer because of their lifestyle and their environment. The physical is influenced by the psychological. They have a community, the kind of happy mutual dependency and lifelong friendship and interaction that human beings evolved for, the kind that is almost impossible to have in the modern world these days.

Also, diet of course but it intertwines with the environment and lifestyle.

I agree with you on this point. The study should focus more on looking into the lifestyle first before progressing to other things like the natural selection, survival bias, etc.

I don't think it's about DNA. What would be interesting to know is how long do those who leave the island live. I'm sure some young people leave the island for study or work...

We already know they won't find any answers by looking at their DNA. Any community of people known to live to an old age do not do as well when they move to somewhere like America.

Yesterday I was watching this Ted talk which mentioned how health is directly dependent on the way you live, the stress you're in and other factors. Living a peaceful life on an island will surely improve your average age of death.

Not to mention, lesser wars, accidents and other problems which we face daily see happening. @originalworks

Why won't they live long, their diet is epic! That alone coupled with the serenity and sea breeze takes away some problems caused by stress.

Who would not be happy in an island eating such rich diet... that alone has the tendency to increase longevity.

I just love their lifestyle though. Me in that environment could even live above 200🤔😁

But seriously their lifestyle contributed to their longevity. I'm also sure the pollution is also very small on that island. We are killing ourselves by modernization and over-dependence on over processed foods

Haha... that's the thing. Our over processed foods only make us have cancer, yet we think we are living posh.
