Once it was necessary for me to visit Kiev and now, wandering through the holy places, I wanted to share the history of the Pokrovsky Monastery. It is located at Bekhterevsky lane 15.

Very long ago, in 1881, Grand Duchess Alexandra Petrovna Romanova, had to leave her Imperial Mariinsky Palace in St. Petersburg, as her husband was expelled by Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolayevich. Alexandra settled in the city of Kiev. She was terribly sick at the time, her body was tormented by vague pains, but the princess did not leave spiritual thoughts, she wanted to create a monastic community, these thoughts visited her more often.

Having recovered a little abroad, the princess became stronger, but her body was still sick. Upon arrival in Kiev, Alexandra Petrovna liked the picturesque nature and climate, which beneficially influenced her well-being. Here, after visiting the Holy Mountain, the princess began to settle.

But her thoughts did not bother her, she began to look for a place to erect a monastery. And soon it was found, two families of Dikov and Alpatov invited her to buy a overgrown wasteland on the outskirts of the city where youth often gathered. Having chosen a place, the princess bought him for fifty thousand rubles.

Plans for the princess were grandiose, she wanted it to be not just a convent, but also a clinic for poor people, where the role of doctors would be assumed by nuns and novices. And the plan was fulfilled, for this she had to sacrifice all her savings.

For twenty years (1889-1911) in this vacant lot, about 30 buildings were erected. They were: a free hospital, a shelter for people with hearing loss, sight, invalids, a pharmacy, by the way in it all medicines were given free of charge, church parish school, church, dormitory. A number of buildings were built on the territory, where nurses of the mercy, a hotel, as well as workshops, where gold-embroidered, icon-painting affairs were engaged, lived. In the hospital there was even a department of surgery, operations were carried out.

Doctor Nikolai Viktorovich Solomka, was the chief assistant of Princess Alexandra, he purchased equipment for the clinic, at that time quite modern. In this hospital and in Kiev (in Russia too) there was the very first X-ray machine here it was first used to establish the diagnosis. Here is a Holy Protection Convent. During the first ten years of the existence of this monastery, a lot of work has been done here, all of this was recorded, for example: there were 5020 people in the hospital, more than half a million people were given free medication, and 2298 operations were done.
