Why Is Camiguin Island, Philippines Called “The Island Born Of Fire“?

Ever wonder why Camiguin Island is dubbed as island born of fire? It's because of the volcanic eruptions that shaped the province. The pear-shaped volcanic island is located in the Bohol Sea, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) off the northern coast of Mindanao. I can’t believe that this small island with a total of 238 square kilometers of land area has seven volcanos which are responsible for it’s unique natural attractions in the present.

The 7 Volcanos:

• Mount Hibok Hibok (considered active & part of the ring of fire)
• Mt. Mambajao
• Mt. Guinsiliban
• Mt. Timpoong
• Mt. Vulcan
• Mt. Uhay
• Mt. Tres Marias
  

This volcanic island has so much to offer. From it’s natural wonders of hot springs, cold and pure soda springs, giant clam sanctuary, the cemetery under water or also known as sunken cemetery, hiking to Mount Hibok-hibok and the stations of the cross.

Aside from it’s abundant natural wonders caused by the volcanic eruptions, another must do in Camiguin are the two islets, Mantique Island located in Mahinog town and vanishing White Island of Mambajao.

Camiguin FACTS

• Camiguin is derived from a tree called ”kamagong" (part of ebony tree family).
• Camiguin Island has the smallest population in Northern Mindanao (Region X).
• The second smallest province in Philippines next to Batanes.
• The number of volcanoes in Camiguin exceeds the number of it’s (5) towns (Mambajao -the capital, Mahinog, Guinsiliban, Sagay and Catarman).
• "Kinamiguin" is the island’s native language.
• ”Pastel de Camiguin”, a bun filled with yema is the Island’s signature delicacy.
• Bura Soda Water Swimming Pool is the only soda water pool in Philippines.
  

This volcanic land mass paradise is one of the places in my home country that I would definitely want to visit again for it’s unique abundance. ❤️
