Poultry experiment
A few months back we bought a few chickens and a rooster as a new experiment. There are 4 chickens and we have eaten their eggs since buying them. The first and foremost advantage is the cost saving it has and other than that the eggs are actually different than the one bought in the local market. The yolk is darker and I read that the processes involved in the commercial industry to produce the eggs can have advert effects in the nutrient counts, so we don't have to worry about that anymore.
For the past month we tried to hatch some of the eggs but the chickens wouldn't sit on them, fortunately we bought another chicken that is a special breed used specifically to hatch eggs. In the beginning the new chicken also didn't sit on the eggs but after a week I saw her sitting on four eggs. This was really special observing the patience by the chicken to just sit and provide warmth on the eggs is just amazing.
After about 2-3 weeks the eggs actually hatched the family members were excited to see the chicks. The four chicks are healthy and now roam around eating with the adults. This is a great way to benefit from,
- First and foremost as mentioned before we don't need to buy eggs.
- Also currently the meat industry is in a scrutiny for using injections and food that just hurries the growth of chickens and having an effect on their hormones, thsi isn't really healthy for us to consume so the chickens can also provide meat for the household.
- The sense of responsibility also increases taking care of these delicate animals.
The advantages come after a lot of hardwork, naturally these animals aren't very durable and have to be looked after, we are fortunate that none of the chickens died after we bought them because this is a common case. Also the absolute mess they create tests your patience cleaning after them in the garage is exhausting. Now that we have passed this initial stage we can enjoy the gifts provided by these chickens. If you have the space and time you should start this way of sustainable living.

Known quite a few people that have kept chickens, I hear it's the roosters that cause all the trouble.
