Are You Prepared If/When the Shit Hits the Fan?

in #survival6 years ago

What would you do if the world as you know it stopped working like it does? What is a disaster hit, and resources were cut off? What is a crisis occurred and you currency was devalued? What if transportation was down and supplies didn't get to where you live? What would you do?

A disaster in life can hit any time. We are so interconnected that we are co-dependent in our modern way of life. Most people aren't prepared to live without these dependencies. Most people don't even think this could happen to them or their way of live. We are taking much for granted.

Even in areas recognized as dangerous, with previous disasters having hit, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, or earthquakes, people don't acknowledge the threat when it arrives, and keep going along with their business as usual. They live their lives as though nothing has changed, and everything is normal.

This is known as the normalcy bias. We're so conditioned to take what we have for granted, that it will always be this way. We even become numb to changes when they occur, thinking they won't even affect us.

People in Hawaii were told to evacuate when the lava erupted, but many stayed home, falsely thinking everything was fine and that they weren't in any danger. Then the lava came and burned up their house. The same for wildfires. People stay and leave, sometimes too late.

People often think bad things can happen. But when the threat is right in front of them, they think the bad thing is only going to happen to someone else, not them. For some reason, they are safe. They can't accept the reality of their lives being at risk, unless they've already faced that reality in the past, and know that a threat is real.

Risks are underestimated, and the likelihood of something bad happening is minimized in favor of "positive" thinking. They think they are safe even when there is danger before them. This prevents people from reacting to the threat. And as such, people don't think ahead to prepare in case danger comes.

Our way of life can easily be disrupted. It's in our best interest to acknowledge the normalcy bias and reject it's overbearing influence to blind us to threats in our immediate presence, or potential threats that can arise in the future. We can prepare for many emergency situations, and be ready for shit happening.

Failure to think ahead and prepare for possible emergency situations is also part of the normalcy bias. Thinking there will always be food in the grocery store, or stocks shelves elsewhere for us to buy things when we need them, is failing to recognize how what is supplied to us can change in a very short period of time. When the shit hits the fan, people are rushing stores and emptying shelves because they weren't prepared ahead of time. Some get there just in time, while others don't.

When it comes to your survival, only you can prepare for it. We live in a great time of abundance with things at our fingertips. But it can all slip away from our grasp without our control. While it's here, we should be mindful of that fact and not take it for granted, as through it will always be this way.

All societies based on fiat currency have failed in the past. We are likely headed towards that eventuality as well. It's only a matter of when. Are you ready for it? Or do you think it can't possibly happen, or happen to you in your lifetime? The financial system is artificially inflated, and has been on the brink of collapse for years. The illusion can only go on for so long before the biggest bubble in history pops.

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

Stories abound that when everything is out because of the hurricane that just blew through, that there are people who are driving from gas station to gas station trying to find gas so they can go to work.

I wish i was more prepared, but today, with all the shit that is coming towards the fan, the only way to be is like @papa-pepper.

Gotta be prepared with whatever you need! Being able to live minimally is a great way to start down this path.

Yes! I live pretty minimally. It is a great way to start to reduce expenses and over-consumption of resources on this planet ;)

Minimal is the way forward in my eyes. There are so many of use here on Earth now, we have to be sparing in how we consume. Sadly I think it will only get worse before it gets better - and this could mean mother Earth doing the 'work' herself, by cutting down the inhabitants.

Yes minimal is key. Unfortunately with the consumerist society we live in today people keep trying to be lavish and unnecessary to emulate some false sense of pride. Saw some golfer the other day on TV building a 10 thousand square foot house in Florida. Absolutely atrocious.

That is ridiculous isn't it. I would not feel at home in that space at all, what a waste.

.... people keep trying to be lavish and unnecessary to emulate some false sense of pride.

Fools gold for sure.

would love to do this, but i have to convince my other half first.

Most people are conditioned into the security bubble, without ever leaving it, or ever having to leave it.

They are nature's victims. (or should I say victims of their own making?)

If you have never lived life 'on the edge', it's an abstract concept , something to be viewed on TV.

I feel sorry for those that never have to be honest.
You have never lived until close to death an' all that...
(going parachuting doesn't even come close, for those that fool them selves they are 'on the edge'. ...I mean real life.)

I have had enough 'living on the edge' to last me a lifetime, but when/if the shit hits the fan, it won't be a life threatening biggie...Just a change.

(a bloody annoying one, but only that).

Most people unfortunately, will become headless chickens...the price of decadence.

It's best to understand, and sometimes on the edge the only way for some to "Get it". But it's not required. I've got survival skills, so I can get on with life if things fall apart. I didn't need to be there already to prepare myself ;)

But it's not required

I only use myself as a comparison.
Before and after kind of thing.
I'm pretty sure the 'before' version of me would not 'get through it' (and I've always been the huck finn type, shooting etc when I was young).

It the psychological mindsets, not the physical hardships (imo)

The real answer is no one is truly prepared. There are numerous particular variables that could have an effect, hell even in the moment, there is no telling where our mental stability would even be. The best thing for people to do right now is build up their physical assets, of course, of valuable things. Fallout from nuclear disaster however makes things rather difficult, and the idea of mass global natural disasters... It's too much to ponder on escape plans, and standing your ground bunkers. It's interesting, but build up what you have and live in the now. :)

I'ts not about being truly prepared, but about being aware and having knowledge and some preparation for the eventuality.

The key to all of this is self-sufficiency. In other words, how much can you depend on yourself for water, food, bartering with people you know and trust for the goods you can offer and those you need. Chris Martenson from Peak Prosperity covers the different kinds of "capital" (e.g., emotional capital, spiritual capital, etc.) and is a great way to look at this in a more comprehensive manner.

Totally agree with you here. Change can come in an instant without giving any of us a chance to prepare for it.

Timely article! (and love all your articles lately, as they are varied and cover so many important subjects, bravo!)

Many of us can see that time (and the jig) is almost up!

This next financial & currency crisis/meltdown will be 100x more devastating than the 2007-08 one, as countless more will lose their jobs and credit markets will freeze up (emptying store shelves); as Bill Holter always says: Everything runs on credit! Thus, the food shortages - especially in the big cities - will get depleted within about a week and things will start to get ugly at that point.

I think that TPTB will purposely leave the US dollar tank as well (they will conveniently and easily use their MSM lapdogs to pin this suffering on Trump) and will wait several months until the masses beg for a new replacement - probably some kind of slavecoin which is all digital and centralized (to further consolidate power and control over their sheeple tax slaves).

As an alternative (or with the new USD slavecoin) it wouldn't surprise me if they also introduced UBI (Universal Basic Income) as a means to further QE/Money print (i.e., inflate away) to push the can down the road for a few more years.

I am still flabbergasted that, most likely, over 85-90% of the population are unaware and unprepared of what should be plain to see coming.

The GIANT ELEPHANT in the ROOM should be obvious for all to see, but unfortunately, most are zombified individuals with their eyeballs glued to their dumbphones.

I think about this very often and I do feel that my survival instinct / animalistic mindset would thrive in a disastrous situation... I say this, however I do not have anything prepared.

Ideally, a bunker would be great, but how long could that last..? It depends on the disaster I guess... I like to think I would be fine but when it really happens who knows what it would be like. Probably nothing like we imagine. Nature is a strong force that we cannot match! But we can try to prepare our minds for any situation, and always try our best. Big fires/floods/natural disasters would be almost impossible to avoid or come out ontop. I wonder if a government style takeover would be easier for us to survive in, I would like to think so... but the technology they possess would be hard to overcome. But togther we could do it! Lots of thoughts right here haha...

Most people aren't.
Being prepared is also about networking. You can't survive on your own.
