Why more successful people are having less SEX

in #success8 years ago

Contrary to the general perception about their freewheeling love life, sex doesn't seem to be a priority of the current generation. If a recent study is anything to go by, those who belong to the swinging 60s and groovy 70s are believed to have had far more rollicking action in the sack than today's youngsters. Though the society has become more liberal in terms of casual sex and people are open to experimenting, millennials are spending very little time having or enjoying sex, revealed the report.
Hmmm... so what could be the reason for that?I tried to get more in-depth knowledge for the benefit of the steem community from my therapist and counsellor friend Dr. Jackie L,(who also happens to be my school mate!!)

According to her :
"modern life is more competitive and complex than ever before.
A large number of high earning professionals feel threatened by fast-paced, aggressive workplaces, which, in turn, has a negative impact on their bedroom activities. And mind you, these are brilliant, responsible, successful and hardworking people who are good at their jobs. However, they are so worried about competition and pre-occupied about being secure that intimacy takes a backseat"
She says they assume that romance is not practical anymore. Apart from this, long working hours and a taxing commute leaves one so tired at the end of the day that sex is the last thing on their mind. "There is no enthusiasm for sex and it keeps getting postponed," she adds. She further explains that many couples who come for counselling often say that even though they are attracted to each other, successful in their careers and there is no infidelity, there is zero intimacy in the relationship.
"Lifestyle choices such as not going on holidays, drinking, smoking and working constantly make it a uni-dimensional life, which often results in a couple feeling disconnected," she informs.

Clinical psychologist Sally Browne too, has similar story to tell. "We see many cases where professionally successful people have been constantly complaining of no sex or very little sexual intimacy in their relationships. This has been an increasing trend since the past three years," she reveals.

The reasons given by couples include high levels of stress at the workplace, feeling fatigued all the time, dysfunctional marriages, sexual disorders and, in many cases, boredom setting in very early. "Many couples are surprisingly married without having had sex for years. The fear of being judged stops them from talking about it," she says.
Is stress a major factor?
"Yes, stress is one of the major reasons for lack of libido. One can tackle stress by being mindful of where the stress is coming from. Meditation is the key. Yoga, swimming and music classes are also useful. Talking to a therapist helps in venting out and being more aware of your dysfunctional thoughts and irrational patterns. Undergoing therapy in these cases really helps," says Browne.

May be its time to wipe that dust off my yoga mat>>>>

I blame/credit easy access to porn.

that seems to be so true!after all people have limited energies!

I blame the modern day gynocentric society where men have to fear being called rapists.

The more VIRTUAL experiences we have - the farther we go from real experiences.

Before FB - we had real friends.
Before facetime - we met friends live.
Before virtual reality or xbox we played outdoors.

And the instant access to any virtual stimulation at the whim of your fantasy is taking more and more people away from real experiences.

I hope this wont come down to one day watching "eating food" videos while we pop food pills!

Technology bridges distance in the short run but leaves gaps that are hard to fill in the long run...

Interesting piece and not necessarily a bad thing, either. As Aldous Huxley puts it: 'An intellectual is a person who has discovered something more interesting than sex.'
