Understanding Market Value 101

in #subjective-value8 years ago (edited)

Let's dream up an extreme scenario. If Steemit is the one and only social media platform that everybody in the world uses (wow.. so moon), what will happen if there's a sudden Armageddon asteroid heading towards our planet? Estimated time of arrival - 24 hours. Such a situation would likely cast a great boon on anything to do with Doomsday. Market value distribution will be focused on stuff like goodbye posts to all sorts of crazy plans to save planet Earth.

In such a situation, ain't no one will have time for food posts.. yo. Unless if it's a post of some raw whale sushi, and somehow, Zeus knows why.. a Steemit whale happened to feel sentimental about it and decided to divert some market value to that post (if someone has the time to make such a post anyway). During Doomsday!

Lesson #1:

The market is never guaranteed to be rational at all times (as a whole).

Lesson #2:

A better sense of market value requires both context and knowledge of possibly hidden information. Not knowing why a food post was trending during Doomsday, @contentchampion made a post about the importance of quality and relevant posts (while also making a remark about the untimely and overpaid food post). Market forces could be hidden.

Lesson #3:

To their credit, @contentchampion even backed-up their post with detailed plans on how to destroy the Armageddon asteroid like a boss. Low cost, effective, and totally human-free. But in the end, no whales voted for @contentchampion's superpost. Instead, the attention was somehow given to one very silly, low-level plan that was promoted by curators. It was a masterplan that simply attracted the market better, and the idea caught on like wildfire. People donated and funnelled market attention to that post.

The plan was to send martyrs to the asteroid - pretty much like what you saw in the movie Armageddon. Lesson here - there may be better stuff of better value out there, but in the end, the market does what it does best - being itself, doing whatever it wants. For that, market value is always fleeting.

Lesson #4:

So what happens after Doomsday has been averted? Life will be back to normal with its breadth of human activities. The only way for a market agent to channel / focus market value into some specific "containers" is to provide enough context and narrative for market evaluation. Market value is largely belief or story-driven, especially in a post-scarcity world. Just take a look at the top of Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

Personally, I think most people hold beliefs which are ultimately selfless in nature (especially if such beliefs had been market-corrected over time). Which is why it's a good thing to express and articulate both thoughts and ideas. The easiest way to do this is through writing and vlogs.

And as always, collusive votes remain as a possibility.

Obviously I'm not an expert in econs and or anything like that. But as someone who assigns value to the world on a daily basis, like anyone else.. I think I may have some good ideas about it, which is the point of this post. While it's important to understand that market value should be diverted to important stuff, it's also important to come into understanding that market value is a somewhat uncontrollable force of nature.

Do you agree with this piece? And, do you have anything to add?

Thanks to @lpfaust for adding an important note for all this:

Each author needs to consider the vehicle to maximize the value and exposure of his or her article more than anything. Something which earns nothing here may do incredibly well elsewhere.

Shouldn't, anyway, all conscious individuals be holding in their awareness at all decision making moments: their aim plus the fact that they are 100% for sure going to die? You don't need to introduce an Armageddon Asteroid complication into it.

all conscious individuals be holding in their awareness at all decision making moments

True, I've always liked to think that everybody is the same - self-maximizing agents (in their own ways). Haha.. you're right. I usually do "thought-experiments" using extreme events in order to learn about things..

I like this post, short and sweet and to the point. I have to admit, I also use extremes to do my first evaluations of behaviours' choices and yours is a good example of it. I guess many people are not necessarily thinking in these terms and would rather push away such extreme consideration, not understanding the actual value of doing so for the world and for themselves as well. On the long run humans are being humans and the movement of consciousness is growing, let's see if it will grow faster than its demise. All for one and one for all! Namaste :)

will grow faster than its demise

Hmm i'm somehow quite optimistic that things would turn out well. Some historians have likened this era to be the same as the phases before the fall of old empires (roman, ancient china, etc) but i think the internet is going to change up such a cycle..

Except that you can't really digest virtual food :-)
(So living in big cities may not be wise when SHTF)
The population of Rome diminished from over a million to about 15,000 as people had to disperse out into the countryside (usually setting up residence around previously established monasteries) when the supply lines broke down and the water aqueducts fell into disrepair.

Yup, I can half-imagine the shitstorm that will happen in large, complicated cities. Clearly you've given this some thought before.. it's very interesting!

I do agree that the internet has the potential of veering things around and I also cross my fingers it will... Inshallah! Namaste :)

Nice explanation of market forces. I like how you give context to what could otherwise be a fairly dry topic by using that humorous Doomsday scenario.

A saying I really like from trading is "the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent". In other words, don't fight the market. You need to go with the flow. If your Doomsday posts aren't getting any attention... why then, start posting some sushi pics.

Haha as a forex player back then, I know what that is like playing 1:400 leverage.. and going for a reversal LOL lose money at the speed of light

Woo, yeah I tend to stay away from leverage. Even something puny like 2x or 4x is too much excitement for me, unless it's a sure bet. I often talk to the traders at work. The amount of stressful situations those guys have to deal with on a daily basis... they really earn their paychecks.

Market value - the whims of the ignorant.

Or as you say, belief and story-driven, emotional not rational. Same thing, I just used stronger words :) As opposed to analyzing and modeling future growth potential comprehensively. (By growth potential, I mean actual turnover and profits, not market value)

Ah yes, now it makes sense!

Impressive post, and very insightful into the nature of the market and the social networking factors that influence mass behaviour.

Simple and clear, but powerful too. Awesome post!

Thanks - glad it's a decent read :)

Lol yeah, that's what writing does. if simplfied, it'd be just one sentence..
