Boosting Mental Performance By Limiting Screen Time

in #study5 years ago

For children up to 8 years old it's estimated that they spend at least 2 hours a day on mobile devices. In 2017, the amount of time that kids were spending on mobile devices tripled in just a few years.

For those who are between the ages of 8-12 they've been found spending at least 6 hours every day online.

Psychologists have suggested that the more time that kids and teens spend online, being inactive and living a sedentary lifestyle, the more damaging that it could eventually become.

Parents, health and child experts, and many children themselves, have admitted that they feel as if spending too much time online has a negative impact on the overall well-being and health of an individual. Parents have frequently been advised that they should try to limit the screen time for their children because of the possibility that it might fuel unhealthy eating habits, an inactive lifestyle, anxiety, depression, and more.

How Much Is Too Much?

A recent study that was published in the journal Lancet Child & Adolescent Health discovered that limiting the screen time for kids could help to promote a higher mental performance. For children who are spending less than 2 hours every day on smartphones or other devices, they've been found to perform better on cognitive tests involving memory, language, and thinking.

The study involved over 4,000 children who were between the ages of 8 and 11 years old. They analyzed their sleep schedules, time spent exercising, time spent looking at a screen (smarpthone etc), and how those all impacted their mental abilities.

They discovered that more than 60 percent of the children were spending over 2 hours every day looking at a screen.

Researchers asserted that for those children who weren't getting enough sleep, being physically active, and limiting their time online, that they had performed worse on a variety of cognitive tests.

The researchers concluded that reduced screen time was positively associated with superior mental performance for children.

They recommend 2 hours or less of recreational screen time for children, as anything more than that they suggest might easily become detrimental to their well-being.

Crazy how society is changing. Who'd ever thought screen time would become one of the most unhealthy things in society. I believe eye health is going to be a growing and growing need as we have generations of kids growing up staring at a small screen three inches away.

There was a time when you would get scolded by your parent for sitting to close to the TV. Now that is all we do with laptops and smart phones and I can tell you from 20 years of use it does have an impact.

I need to buy stock in eye care products. ;-)

DEFINITELY resteeming this one.

@doitvoluntarily hello dear friend happy year
Times have changed a lot and children too, before they reach the age of two, they already use any device, it is as if they were prepared before they were born, I think limitation is convenient.
I wish you a great day

I have to say the image of the baby playing with a tablet really bothers me. There is something disturbing here. And 6 hours per day for kids from 8-12 years old is also deeply concerning to me.

it's easier to let the electronics do the parenting 😯
