Prelude to the Fall

At first, we all denied it was happening. Everyone was feeling it, but no one wanted to openly acknowledge it. Even after the physical symptoms started to show, everyone remained in a state of denial. Massive, co-ordinated Internet takedowns were initiated, and but for a tiny few, no one protested. Nobody wanted to face the reality of what was happening. They kept this up until the incident.

After that, denial was no longer an option. A flood of scientific information was released, and for a brief time, it looked like we might make it. The transformations were still in their early stages, no one knew how far it was going to go, and for the most part, a great many people were able to suppress their ... natural inclinations.

People overcame their differences. Crisis centers were established. Internet movements were started.

Society did become much more violent, however, immediately. Personal safety became a big priority for everyone, at all times. Some people had no interest in the "old ways". Respect for the law was gone, and for some, it was open season on the rest of us. To this day I don't know if they were evil, or just ahead of their time. Had we all known where things were going, I don't think we would have maintained any order whatsoever. We were lucky to have had the few months we did.

Political and spiritual leaders came forward, doing their best to reassure their followers, the few left listening. It was largely a futile effort. The genie was out of the bottle, and no one could ever put it back. None of the religious texts contained anything that remotely resembled what was happening. No one in Government had any good answers: they could tell us some of the science, but as to why? They didn't know. How were we going to cope? They didn't know. It was hard not to see the panic in their eyes. They were lost, scared men, pretending to have answers they did not. It hard to blame them. The situation was unprecedented: unimagined. It was beyond science fiction.

Not long into the transformation, the two sided nature of our affliction became apparent. The great majority was suffering, but a select few were experiencing just the opposite: they were moving forward, not backwards. And they were evolving into something that no one quite understood. It was not hard to see where most were headed, but these few .. it was something no one had seen before. Some of them were beyond description; spectacular in all respects.

Great debate raged over what was happening, particularly among the spiritual leaders. A few said they were becoming Gods. Most did not agree with this, I suspect due to the fact that not a single religious leader was undergoing this type of transformation. They were all going the other way. Every. Single. One. The same could be said of the political class, lawyers, the entirety of Wall Street, ALL of Hollywood and most of professional sports. No one of any fame was ... moving forward. They were all going back, many of them much more rapidly than the rest of us.

Near the end, right before it all fell apart, comical efforts were made to keep everyone working together, and on the same page. Offices were segregated, work shifts were re-arranged to align like with like .. even restaurants catered to different types of people, on different types of days.

Near the end, it was generally accepted that if you went to the wrong place, at the wrong time, you'd end up dead. It wasn't even considered a crime. This was worldwide, too: not just here and there. Although at that point, half the world had already lost all semblance of civilization. Half the world was already dark.
