The Well - Flash FictionsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #story7 years ago

No one knew where it came from. It appeared in the middle on the town. A large well. One of the town members peered over the edge. It was pitch black.

"Hello" he yelled down the hole.

There was an echo. His voice came booming back, louder, loud enough that the whole town could hear it. But then something else happened. A gold coin shot out of the well. It landed right in the hand of the man who shouted. Everyone was amazed. A woman took a step towards the well.

"Hey, my name is Alice, may I have some money."

Again an echo. This time three coins came out of the well. Alice caught them all. A man in the back had an idea. He took a picture, printed it and tossed it in the well. It slowly faded into the darkness. Then there was a flash. The image that was on the photo (a sunset) appeared in front of everyone for a second then faded. Then 10 coins went to the man who tossed in the photo.

"I like that photo," another man said. It was loud enough that the well could hear it. Another echo and another coin.

"Even our comments make money," said one woman.

Everyone in the town gathered around the well. They threw it photos, told stories and replied with generic comments. Gold coins continued to rain. People quit their jobs. Everyday they went to the well and said something. Everyone was talking. No one was listening.

After a week of this people started to get bored. The money was nice but people figured they could just go back to their jobs. At least they didn't have to work such long hours, in order to work at the well people had to stay all night. One man stopped talking. He was going to walk away when he heard something interesting. A friend had just wrote a book.

"I didn't know you could write," he said towards well.

"Yeah," his friend replied, "I always wanted to write a novel."

"What is it about?"

More people stopped talking as they heard the conversation going. Sam is writing a novel? That is amazing. People started to ask questions. The conversation went back-and-forth as did the coins. No one was paying attention to what they were making. Then it happened, the sun started to come up. Everyone looked in their hands. They were full of gold. They had 'worked' through the night. No one realized it. The next day people waited for someone to talk first before they spoke

And they all lived happily ever after :p

And yes this is fiction, I'm just as guilty as anyone of posting content just for the payouts. Just a reminder even 'work' can be fun if you let it. Personally I like the contests on the site and as I writer I am good focusing on my content. No that I'm not friendly :). But for those of you who are social butterflies this site has a lot to offer.
