Excuses, Excuses - Flash Fiction

in #story7 years ago

Diane set the camera on the map. She sat beside her husband. They were going to do it this time. Go on a trip. Neither of them had left the country. They stared at the map and debated where they should go. There was so many things they wanted to see. It was such a huge planet.

"How about Japan?" Greg asked.

"Yes."

"Or Spain?"

"Also yes," Diane said with a smile.

"I don't know... but we are going this time for sure."

"Yes... we will not talk our way out of it."

"I have an idea," Greg said as he took the camera off of the map. He grabbed a tack and moved to the wall. With a bit of pressure he stuck the map to the wall. Then he went to get a dart.

"Maybe we should do this in the basement?" Diane said with a smile.

"Good idea."

The two of them took the map and stuck it beside the dartboard. Greg picked up a dart.

"Alright I'm going to throw a dart and wherever it lands that is where we are going. No ifs, ands or buts."

"Agreed."

Greg grabbed a dart and took a few steps away from the board. He lifted his arm and readied his shot. With one eye closed he let the dart fly. It landed right on Toronto... where they were from. Where they had always lived.

"What!" Diane said with fake suprise, "what are the odds?"

Greg looked at the trophy behind his wife. It was for the dart championship. He won it three years in a row.

"I guess we are staying here this time."

"Yes, but next time we are going somewhere else."

"For sure," Greg said as he turned off the light, "for sure."

Haha! This has such a funny hook. I do the exact same thing. One nitpick though, how could his wife not know that he has won a dart championship three times in a row?? Haha! She didn't even suspect any foul play.

Oh she knew, she wanted to stay as much as he did. I was going to make her a dart champion as well and have the joke that she throws it next time.

Haha! I'd say that I find the one you already posted more entertaining. It might've been too convoluted if you made her a dart champion as well.

This is a clever little story. Well written and intriguing.
