Love Lessons, Chapter 2.3 of Purgatory

“Why don’t the Krors and Groots just jump somewhere, instead of being eaten by the dragon?”

“Maybe they can’t now that they are Kror and Groot.” Vestas answered. We have two choices, we can stay here on the edge, where we can watch what happens or we can move into the forest where we will be hidden. We know that the pool and the spring are here and what they do but if we move into the forest.” Vestas trailed off as he thought.

“There might be something else to face?” Carol asked.

“One of us always has to keep watch if the other rests, just like when you were a Kror. I had you on my back.”

“How do I wake you, I still don’t know?”

“You have to move yourself into me or move your thoughts into me and get my attention to wake up. All you have to do is think you are a part of me but you have to be careful or you will be a part of me. You can’t merge too much or we will be one person. We will be two spirits in one body. It does take practice. It requires trust.”

“So I have to enter into you like a possession or something?”

“Carol you have already possessed me, but yes just not too much. Dragging me is very much the same, which I could not do while I was a Groot and you were a Kror.”

“So when we changed all of the lessons are useless.”

“Oh look, the dragon was a scout. It is bringing more dragons.”

“It looks like there are at least fifty and some of them are higher than we are.” Carol observed with a tremor in her voice.

“Imagine you are rock.” Vestas changed while Carol looked at him. He became a part of the mountain top. “Quickly, imagine you are a part of the mountain.”

“But we will have to watch what happens, it will be horrible.”

“Concentrate on changing Carol. If we move they might see us and you do not know how to jump far enough to escape the dragons.”

“How is this?”

“Keep concentrating and concentrate to stay rock. It is just like putting on clothing. Better, you are hidden much better.” Vestas praised her efforts. “Keep concentrating because the higher ones are getting closer.”

“I don’t want to see this. I wish we could have helped them to change back before the dragons came.”

“If there are any left, we will try to help those. Remember, they have to walk up here. I refused to leave and what you do not know is that the lions, wolves, and bears were so very close that we were about to be torn apart. I changed first and I did not leave you. I had to move you so you could bite the tree. If you do not want to watch, close your eyes. I will keep watch Carol.”

“I would like to close my eyes but maybe I should watch and learn.” Carol mumbled.

“That’s the spirit.” Vestas replied.

As they sat on the edge of the mountain looking down, like they were geese flying in three ‘v’ formations, the dragons swooped in to attack the Krors and the Groots.

Vestas thought, if they saw us, they ignored us to attack the large encampment. The scouts that were out saw what was happening and ran away as fast as they could go. In waves, the dragons swept across the camp town and some spewed fire on the first pass.

The dragons flew past and up and then they turned for another pass. Again, the dragons passed over the encampment and some spit flames in great swathes as they flew over lighting tents and wagons on fire. Smoke rose up and billowed into clouds in the sky.
