SERVER (An Original Poem)

in #story8 years ago (edited)

We live in
different worlds,
the veil between
the two, as thin as the
apron draped
across your waist

their days
are your nights,
their holidays bring
you ache and
they bring you angst

you serve them
in atmospheric cellars
pouring Syrah as they
speak of their struggles,
each sip lessening the
weight of their chains

you must wear
your smile,
all the while,
as you deal with
the worst of humanity,

a certain harshness spewed
by people who
envy your life
of lesser indignities,

deep down they know
you can hold your head high,
relax after your shift
with a beer and a smoke and know
that work of each day is behind you,

don’t think they can’t
see in your eyes,
the fact that
you are not haunted
by a ghost that whispers...
somewhere long ago
you sold your soul
for a set of false promises,
you know will be snatched away

so go about your day
grab your bites to eat, quickly
from behind the counter,
serve them their drinks
and let them to continue
the dignity of their great facade

as you put your feet up
and count your tips,
take comfort that you have found
your merry band
and they're all as real as you

be glad that these
two worlds will never truly meet
for they are separated forever
by a veil of truth,
as thin as the apron
draped across your waist.

I like the image of the work of the day behind you. That is definitely the trade-off between mundane work and toiling toward a dream. The dream-work, even when done, still remains ahead of you until the dream is realized. The mundane work, when done, is done.

Thanks, @geke! I see three distinct worlds, white collar, blue collar, and entrepreneurs (dream work). I was comparing the white collar world to people in the restaurant industry here. I think dream work, as exhausting and demanding as it can be, fills most of us with positive energy and satisfaction. Unfortunately, most of us doing the dream work have to have one of our feet in the other two worlds as well, complicating things even more.

Slamming, gripping, like I puzzled over a section of scripture that made me want to understand

Thank you! I hope you enjoyed it. My wife and I have many friends in the restaurant industry and I have great respect for them.

great
