Chapter 2 The order of the dragon

Now that the pleasantries had been exchanged and Ben felt as though he knew Zim he invited him into his modest home. Zim waisted no time as he walked over to the small dining table near the hearth and motioned Ben to sit down. Ben immediately complied. As Ben was walking over and sitting down his mind started racing and he began to wonder if this wizard Zim had some how enchanted him the way he felt this strong kinship toward him after having just met the man. He realized that no sooner had Zim told him that they were going to be friends that he felt as though they were.
As soon as Ben was settled into the chair with the slightly wobbly leg that he always sat in so as not to make Sandra have to sit in it. Zim began to speak "I have much that I must teach you before we leave for the tower."Ben couldn't believe his ears Zim was telling him that they were going to the tower of the dragon. Zim continued " For starters you are to be one of the most powerful wizards in the last hundred generations. I know that that may sound a bit far fetched but believe me it is true." As though ben's mind wasn't already racing now he had a million questions. Before Ben could say a word Zim continued "I know this may come as a shock but your birth has been foretold by prophecy since the beginning of time. I know you will have many questions and believe me I will answer them but let me teach you a few things first."
"Everyone born and everyone ever born is born with the spark of life given to us by the creator. In some very rare cases some people are giving the flame and that is what gives people like you and I the ability to work magic." Zim told Ben this as though he were a teacher instructing a pupil.
Ben couldn't help himself and had to ask. "How is it you know I have this flame? And how do you know I am the man from your prophecy?"
Zim showed Ben a patient smile and continued "Your wife was attached by an empherial and you were able to cast it away. Empherials only come into existence when a great wizard comes into his power and removes any obstacles from his path of reaching his destiny." Ben was stricken with sadness at hearing this and began to feel rage burning inside him when suddenly the entire house began to shake.
Zim quickly said "You must calm your self!" In that thunder like voice that Ben had herd earlier when Zim was calling his name and the house became still again and Ben felt the rage subsiding
Zim's voice went back to normal and actually had a bit of fear in it as he continued "You must learn to control the flam or the consequences could be dire. That is exactly what I was sent here to teach you."
Zim's voice settled back to that of a teacher speaking to a pupil as he continued "Now that we know you can touch the flames we need you to be able to control them before you are consumed by them. What I need you to do is clear your mind." Zim shot a glance at Ben as to say he expected him to comply immediately and Ben caught the glance and did as Zim had instructed "good now that your mind is clear I want you to picture a small spark. Okay now feel that spark catch ahold and see the start to smolder and turn into a flame." Zim's voice suddenly filled with excitement " Amazing I have never seen someone do that on their first try."
Ben's mind was completely empty except the small flame that seemed alive and completely at his control. Ben just knew that he could make the flame do what ever he wanted it to. Ben willed the flame to grow and it immediately compiled then he willed it to stand still and stop moving as flames always do and again it complied as though it were a still photograph of a flame. In his mind Ben could hear Zim's voice "Ok now you are just showing off."as Ben came out of his trance like state and began to see through his eyes again instead of his minds eye he noticed that everything was perfectly still the fly hovering over the table wasn't even moving it's wings were perfectly still the flame in the hearth wasn't dancing and even Zim looked like he was frozen his mouth didn't even move when Ben heard his voice in his head saying he was showing off. Ben released his hold on the flame in his mind and allowed it to dance again and just like that the fly's wings began to flap again. Ben even noticed Zim exhale as though he had been holding his breath in his frozen state.
Zim began to speak again this time moving his mouth not just in Ben's mind "You truly are the man from the prophecy" for the first time Ben knew it was true.
Zim continued "Now that you can control the flame I have a few simple exercises I want you to do. Have the flame pick this up." Zim said as he removed an amulet from his robes and laid in on the table.
Ben once agen saw the flame in his mind and willed it to make the amulet lift off the table but nothing happened. So Ben made the flame grow and willed the amulet to rise off the table still nothing happened but Ben could see the flame shrinking even as he willed it to get bigger Ben than stopped trying to make the amulet come off the table and instead willed the flame to make the table come off the ground. As soon as Ben stopped trying to make the amulet do something he had complete control over the flame again and made the table hover about a foot off the ground.
Zim's mouth fell open and now he looked like a child seeking the sky lights for the first time. Zim regained his composure and began to speak
"How in the name of the creator were you able to do that?"
Ben said as though it wasn't a big deal " I realized that I couldn't move the amulet so I stopped trying and moved the table it was sitting on"
"You truly are amazing" Zim said in a reverent tone then Ben allowed the table to settle back on the floor. Zim went back to his teacher voice as he said "this amulet is five thousand years old made by the greatest wizard ever to have walked the earth Heximose Starbirth its only real purpose is that it can't be touched by magic and consumes any magic that tries."
Ben began to get a little annoyed that Zim had asked him to use magic on something he knew he could not. Ben asked Zim in a slightly annoyed voice "than why did you ask me to use magic to pick it up?"
"The prophesy that you were named in was from Heximose himself he said you would be the first wizard to lift this amulet using magic and so you did" Zim trailed off as though coming to a realization for the first time
Coming out of his thoughts Zim continued "for thousands of years wizards have done everything in their power to try to undo the enchantment on this amulet so they could simply make it move with magic and every one of them failed including me"
"You're telling me nobody ever tried to just lift the table it sat on" Ben said as though it were the simplest idea in the world
"Not on the first day after being able to control the flame" Zim said as he thought about his first day of being a wizard nearly a thousand years ago.
