Chapter Eight - Escape
Still on the Rave god reruns
Nini, the last among the Nupe Gods, strolled the halls of the palace Old Oyo Empire, his mind drifting as
he pondered over the prisoners in the palace dungeons. It seemed bizarre how that mortal had
suddenly appeared at the corridor to the prison at the point when they were draining the self-sufficient
Yoruba god. His excuses of getting lost in the tower sounded too weak even to Nini’s ears. Well, no
matter, He would die today. Come to think of it, Nini was getting hungry for a power feeding from the
captured god. He turned his feet in the direction of the dungeons, hurrying so as to get a head start on
his brothers.
He still marveled at the ability of this she-god who called herself Omotola. He had never met a god who
had an independent source of power. All power was believed to come directly from Olodumare, and the
fact that this young god could replenish her power even if drained served as a constant source of
puzzlement to himself and his brothers. Gutsu had suggested taking her back to their homeland to their
council of elders to figure out what exactly she was. Well god or something else, she was their captive,
and a rich source of power at that. His power had grown greatly since he started feeding off her. He,
who was the runt of the litter, was now on an equal footing of power with his brothers. Omotola indeed
was a blessing from Olodumare.
He turned the corner and unsealed the ward he had placed on the passage leading to the door of the
prison and proceeded down the winding passage. As he put his hand on the door to push it opened, he
heard a muffled crash inside. Hurriedly he pushed the door further inward and ……….

Omotola didn’t sleep throughout the night, digging and digging for more power. Ode kept giving small
encouragements to try harder till she snapped at him and he kept quiet. She dug painfully and deeply,
but by morning she only had enough power to light a candle. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she
braced herself for the humiliation and pain that would follow the sunrise. By the gods! She was tired of
this punishment. She never asked to be a god. She never asked to be self-sufficient. She desperately
wished she was at home listening to stories her mother told her about foreign gods when something
clicked in her mind. Her mother had said the Yoruba had no gods, but the gods of other lands got their
power from Olodumare, and as they drew power from Olodumare, Olodumare got stronger and more
powerful. This was because the gods themselves prayed to and worshipped him. Omotola decided on
what to do. It was a slim chance but it was the only one they had.
She looked up at Ode who was now half asleep and barked, ‘Ode I’ve figured out a way to replenish my
powers ’.
‘Wha-uh-uh’ he mumbled, jerking awake.
‘I’ve figured out a way to get us both the amount of power we need to get out of here’.
‘Both? I don’t under..’
‘Ode, do you trust me?’ she asked, looking at him with icy calm.
He gulped and faced her squarely. ‘Yes’
She gathered the little scrap of power in her and burned the ropes binding him and he fell to the floor.
He stood up, rubbing his scraped wrists and looked at her inquiringly.
‘What are you planning?’
‘Kneel’, was what she said
A little of his godly demeanor must have still remained in him because he puffed up and opened his
mouth to argue.
‘You said you trust me Ode, please just go with me this once’. She said, her eyes begging him to hurry.
He knelt, his eyes wide with fear as the realization of what she wanted to do crept slowly over his face.
And then she said the words.
‘Worship me’.
He bowed his head to the floor and opened his heart to her like he did when worshipping Olodumare
and he worshipped. He kept on till the sun began to creep into the room and.. Wait! Was that the sun?
He raised his head to behold Omotola, shining like the sun and had to shield his eyes when two things
happened simultaneously.
The bonds holding her prisoner melted like water and the door to the prison opened, admitting Nini, the
seventh of the Nupe gods. Nini raised a palm, probably to send lightning at Omotola when Ode suddenly
found himself face to face with Nini, slapping his palm away, re-directing the lightning upward. Ode
gasped and looked at himself. He was once again glowing with divine power, his body glorying in it after
being so long without. He raised a palm and blasted Nini back into the corridor but the runt god landed
on his feet.
As Ode moved forward to strike, Omotola whizzed past him, her hair glowing white and her eyes blazing
with divine anger as she blasted Nini who put up a shield just in time to avoid being evaporated. She
pounded his shield repeatedly with divine power until it began to weaken. Footsteps sounded on the
other side passage leading to the corridor and Ode wove a shield of fire and air to slice anyone who
walked through to pieces and incinerate the remnants. Nini was extremely strong from the power he
had drained from Omotola for the past five days and he was matching her blow for blow. Until he made
a mistake, sending lightning which Omotola caught in her bare hands and drove into his heart. His eyes bulged unbelievingly as he looked down at the bolt of lightning sizzling in his chest. Omotola didn’t give
him time to react as she vaporized him. She staggered as he turned to tiny particles and drifted while
Ode rushed quickly to hold her upright. His shield was being pounded and it was a matter of seconds
before the remaining gods rushed in to stop them. Omotola shrugged him off and moved forward
determinedly with the intention to destroy the other gods, murder in her eyes. But she staggered again,
and Ode grabbed her and held on firmly when she tried to shrug him off again.
‘We have to leave, we are no match for the remaining six. Let’s get out while we can’ he said urgently,
holding her tight as she tried to break free.
‘You don’t know what they did to me’, she said, tears streaming as she fought him ‘You don’t have an
idea the number of times they..’
‘I know, and they will pay’, he said, ‘but not today. Omotola we have to go NOW!’ he roared as the six
gods broke through the shield and turned the corridor to face them.
He gave them no time to react as he blasted fire, earth and water at them while launching himself and
Omotola through the solid ceiling and the palace itself, blasting himself out into the morning sky as they
raced south, leaving Oyo behind.
