Descriptions on the Spot for 11/19 - 11/26 - We're Back!
After a long hiatus, I wanted to get Descriptions on the Spot back up and running.
Since the first time I saw a Descriptions on the Spot post back in July, I was on-board with the idea. I loved having an on-going project where people could submit ideas and concepts in the forms of words or images to inspire writers toward creating pieces of short fiction. Some of my best work, like Solaris and this picture bounty, came about as responses to Descriptions word and picture prompts. Being able to flex my creative muscle repeatedly and across a wide variety of ideas has helped improve my writing significantly.
Since then, Steemit has grown significantly, but DotS seems to have fallen by the wayside quite a bit. I still see pictures tagged with #descriptionsonthespot, but I haven't seen a piece of fiction put out for the project since. Granted, I've been gone for a long while on my own projects, and I know @jedau and @complexring have engaged in other projects, but I think it's time to bring it back. So, without further ado...
How It Works:
Descriptions on the Spot will feature writing prompts in the form of words or pictures on a rotating basis. Prompts that aren't used from one week will be rotated out to the next week for reuse. If we get a whole ton of them hanging on over time, we'll clear them out and start fresh, but I don't see that being a problem.
Leaving Suggestions
Leave a comment with either a word or phrase for authors to use as inspiration for a short fiction piece. It can be any length; whatever inspires you to create a story, we suggest you run with it! As for what words to put up, the sky is the limit, but I would ask that you restrict the length of phrases to only a few words (running out of fuel, full speed ahead, etc.). Just enough to get the creative juices pumping, so to speak.
If you're a photographer or artist and want to let others use your art as inspiration, tag your post with #descriptionsonthespot and leave a link to it in the comments section.
Submitting Your Work
If you're an author and you've decided to take one of the word suggestions as inspiration for a story, make sure to title your piece with Descriptions on the Spot: (word or phrase). If you've decided to do a story based on a tagged photo or piece of art, make sure to title your piece with Descriptions on the Spot: Photo Bounty and tag the original artist in an introduction. Once you have your article written, come back to the original comment that inspired you and reply with a link to your story!
Goal
As always, Descriptions on the Spot is about encouraging and fostering creative writing talent. We're here to build a community, so encouragement of people and constructive criticism (so long as it remains constructive and not condescending or arbitrary) are always welcome! If you read a story that you liked, reply to the author and let him or her know what you thought.
