Silver of the Day #31

Father's Day

It's a little late in this year and a little early for next year to be posting about Father's Day, but I'll do it anyways. Fathers are largely missing in society today. There are still some great ones out there, but there are many guys who are AWOL when it comes to spending time with their kids and teaching them how to live. So this post is to honor those who are around.

I've been posting about the generic rounds and bars that I've been picking up from the LCS. This one is no different. There's such a huge variety of things you can find, and at rock bottom prices, you can't beat these deals... unless you go to Ray's Coin Store.

Most of the time I know very quickly which coins are coming home with me. Some are the "same old, same old" but others just pop... or in this case, Pops.

Here's to you, Dad!

They didn't get the year right, but close enough. As long as it's within 50 years it counts.

There's nothing on the back, but thought you might want to see it anyways. Maybe it was reserved so people could have custom engravings or stamping done to personalize the bar.

I like that whoever made it chose an owl to represent Fathers as owls are supposed to be old and wise. There are a lot of things we can learn from others who have gone through experiences that we haven't, so I resonate with the idea of getting wisdom from them.

The challenge now becomes to show appreciation to the Fathers in our lives, wherever they are, and even though it isn't Father's Day. They don't have to be blood-related, they could be someone who has taken a lot of time and energy to help us along our journey. Whoever they are, might I suggest taking a little time to show them how much you appreciate them today?

thats a cool old bar. I love the old art bars, but rarely ever find them around here.

Thanks. That's one of the main reasons I go to the more expensive store: they have a better selection of random bars and rounds. I like to mix things up a bit. Keeps things a little more interesting.

Wow that is so awesome!! Ok I am start buying these bars....resisting the urge, but these are so cool. :) haha

A lot of people start with coins and rounds (like I did), but eventually they start finding one ounce bars with different patterns like this one, and they get hooked. I'm probably more hooked on finding cool patterns than I am on getting the lowest price for weight of silver. I did pay a bit extra in premiums for these. But they're unique and cool.

That is cool. I think it would be cool just to have a plain 1 ounce silver bar. I will start with that first, lol before I start paying a little extra for cool designs. lol Just need some extra cash for collecting! haha

So from my experience, it would be difficult to get a plain one. I don't think it would be impossible, but they're just called blanks. I don't know that many people sell them. If you just want to get any one ounce silver bar, head to your local coin shop and look in their bargain bin. Normally they have some coins, rounds (they're shaped liked coins, but are made by private mints, not governments), and bars that they sell for a small premium. This one I got for around $17. Not too bad of a premium!

I hear you about needing more cash for getting more silver. This would be a great time with the prices so low.

oh really?? That is so cool, yeah I need to go to the coin shop near me and check things out. I totally didn't even think about that. Nice suggestion, thanks! :)

I haven't bought anything online yet. I haven't had an abundance of money, so it's not worth it to buy stuff if I'm not going to get free shipping. Therefore, I go to the coin store with $50 or so and see what I can pick up. Sometimes it's only three ounces at a time, but that's still something. And if you find one that has a great variety, then you're going to get hooked very quickly. :)

hahaha cool! will have to film my coin collection video soon! :) And might just check out the coin shop tomorrow. ha!

I just saw your comment now, so "tomorrow" is now probably "today," but just in case, most of the coin stores around me are closed on Sunday so if you're thinking of going on Saturday, you're probably good. If you're thinking of going Sunday, it might not work out so well.

Normally I would let people figure out when their own stores are open, but there's one near me that's closed Sunday/Monday. I tried going on a Monday once because I didn't check the hours. The disappointment was rough. When you're anticipating silver and get none, it's a trying thing to deal with. I'll leave it at that. ;)

the man who raised me was not my biological father , but he all the things that you would expect that a loving father would do - he was a great provider, he taught me lots of things, he gave me encouragement, and taught me leadership abilities - I think about him all the time and though he was taken from us , I will always cherish the time I had with him. A father doesn't need to be blood related - he just needs to be enough of a man to show lov , care, and compassion to someone he really has no obligation to do so for.

I'm glad you had such a positive role model in your life. Yes, there are often people who father us who aren't actually related. Still, they take time, effort, money, energy, etc to help us become capable adults who can make good choices and treat others well.

A father doesn't need to be blood related - he just needs to be enough of a man to show love , care, and compassion

I think you said it very well!

Also, I'm sorry for your loss. It's difficult to lose someone you love, regardless of whether or not they are related to you by blood.

Nice vintage bar! I miss my Dad. Was I in silver earlier when my Dad was still around, I would have showered him with Fathers Day bars like that one.

I'm sorry to hear your dad isn't around anymore. Sadly it happens sooner or later to all of us. That doesn't necessarily make it any easier though, so again, I'm sorry. I'll bet he would have loved one of these.

I haven't bought silver on ebay at all, so do your own research, but here's one that I found listed there. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1973-Fathers-Day-Owl-1-Ounce-999-Silver-Art-Bar-SD33-/253221830013.

I just searched google for "father's day 1973 silver owl bar"

How much is that worth? for a father's day gift that would probably have been mighty expensive no?

I found another one on ebay for around $25 with shipping. Do your own research on it though as I've never bought silver on ebay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1973-Fathers-Day-Owl-1-Ounce-999-Silver-Art-Bar-SD33-/253221830013

There must be some collectible value to it as the silver content would be worth around $15.55 right now. Not too bad for a gift. Maybe even give a few of them. :)

Okay, so I just looked this up. I didn't know this, but apparently Father's Day was not officially celebrated as it is now until June of 1972. That would mean that June 17, 1973 was only the second Father's Day celebrated on an official national basis in the U.S.

Apparently, Mother's Day started back in 1914.

While it was a month ago, I do appreciate to all fathers who stick around, and not only that, take time to be with their children. Why have them if you're not going to be a part of their lives.

I've found nothing more important in mine. I'm thankful that I had a business for much of their growing up that allowed me to be with them and teach them different things. I can only hope that what I tried to instill in them will stick with them for the rest of their lives. So far, I think some of it has at least. The rest, they will probably pick up as their little families grow and mature.

Oh, and cool silver bar, by the way. :)

I didn't realize that it wasn't officially celebrated until then. I would have figured that it would be much earlier.

I'm glad you had so many chances to be with your kids while they were growing up. I'm sure they appreciated the time they got with you, if not then, at least now.

Thanks, I really like it!

I was really surprised myself. I guess I'll have to go delving into a bit more to see if I can find out why it took so long. The summer of 1972 would have been during the Nixon administration, prior to his re-election. I would have thought there would plenty of opportunity by prior presidents to national a holiday for fathers just like for mothers, especially since it would be held on a Sunday and would not interfere with the work week.

Maybe a bunch of fathers showed up in D.C. with baby buggies and shouted, "We want equality! We want equality!"

Okay, probably not, but hey, it could have happened. :)

I doubt the men showed up with strollers to demand it. It was more likely that someone wanted to score some political points, so decided to move forward with it. Then again, who really know? There are always layers upon layers of subterfuge in politics.

@themanwithnoname wow just browsing around steemit and saw your post. What beautiful owl silver bar this is! Love it! Upvote to support...hoping to see more!

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. I try to get a variety of silver coins and bars that have awesome animals on them. Thanks for stopping by!

Cool looking forward to looking at the variety that you have! :) Hopefully I can illustrate as beautiful as the coin designs one day, I illustrate and can learn from how other artists create these beautiful coin designs!

howdy there Blondie! kinda generic with a blank back but the front with that owl is gorgeous so I think I'd probably have to keep it.

Picky, picky. Ha ha! Yes, they didn't do anything on the back, but I speculated it was so it could be personalized to the specific father. Just a theory.

yeah but we both know the real reason but we know that you can't accept the truth about it because that piece is in your protection and wants to be in your collection so you are kinda blind to the truth. which is understandable.

Ha ha ha, you're killing it with the jokes recently! That's funny. Yeah, I'm probably too biased because it's like a little silver child that needs my protection. Thanks for giving me some perspective. :)

I was funny? yay, that's cool. I'm no noname that's for sure. lol

Heh, I'm not sure anyone is. Think about that! :D

uhhh....no comprende

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold

So beautiful! I love this one! Imagine some dad getting this in 1973 by his children and probably wife. It makes me wonder how and why it ended up in the coin shop? Did they fall on hard times? Divorced? Dad passed away and mom/kids needed the money? Do you ever wonder that kind of stuff?

But in the end, I wanted to say to you, "Thanks Dad, for helping me with my journey on Steemit :)"

"Thanks Dad, for helping me with my journey on Steemit :)"
I actually have thought quite a bit about it. It's such a unique piece and you would think that it would be one of the later ones to go, so I'm really surprised that it was there. This was one of those pieces that I picked without even thinking about it. I saw it and it was already going to be purchased.

I don't know what would cause someone to sell this. I'm a silver enthusiast, so I don't plan on selling it unless it's to upgrade to something else. Or if I end up swapping some for gold. But the average person who might not understand the value of it... they may have just thought that it might be worth something and taken it to the coin shop so they could cash in. That money is probably long gone now.

That's one of the reasons I like silver is that it's tangible, and it's easier to hang onto since it's not as liquid as fiat currency.

Ha ha, not quite what I had in mind, but you're welcome! I'm glad I've helped. It makes me wonder what our first interactions were. Hmmm.

It makes me wonder what our first interactions were. Hmmm.

I have no idea!! I remember the first time we chatted and laughed on Discord, but on steemit? no clue! I asked @glenalbrethsen the same thing, but together we couldn't figure it out either :)

Oh, well. I don't remember when I started being friends with most of my friends, but that's ok. It's the continuation of the friendship, not the beginning that matters.
