# 7 - Baseball in Coins
Everybody knows that Americans love three collective sports : Basketball, Baseball and Football.
Basketball had only a few coins minted and Football had none. Considering that Football is the most watched and played collective sport in the world, that number zero is odd.
Wait ! They call Football a game that is played with the hands, not with the feet ! Couldn't they have chosen a better name for it ?
The real football is called Soccer there and this sport had several coins commemorating it, minted by the US Mint.
In a future article I will show you the Basketball and Soccer coins. Unfortunately I cannot show you Football coins ...
Today is Baseball Day !
In 1992 the Mint issued a commemorative coin about the Summer Olympic Games of Barcelona with the image of a baseball player. Although many fans recognized the photo that originated the coin as being one from Nolan Ryan, the Mint denied this observation. You be the judge.
This coin has a silver purity of 90% and weight of 26.73 grams. It was minted in BU(Brilliant Uncirculated) (187,522) and in Proof (504,505).
In 1995 commemorating the Summer Olympic Games of Atlanta we have this $.50 coin.
This coin is copper-nickel with a BU mintage of 164,605 and a Proof mintage of 118,087.
The next coin is a 1997 homage to Jackie Robinson. He was the first African-American to play in the Major League Baseball in the Modern Era, in 1947. He also was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
These coins are 90% silver, 26.73g, the BU mintage is 30,180 and the Proof mintage is 110,002.
Finally, in 2014 the Baseball Hall of Fame had its two coins : $1 and $.50. These were the first coins(in America) that were not flat. They have the curve of a baseball glove.
They are 90% silver, 26.73 g, BU mintage is 131,311 and Proof mintage is 267,557. These coins are thicker because of the curvature.
These coins are copper-nickel, 11.34g, the BU mintage is 142,405 and the Proof mintage is 249,049.
There are algo gold coins about baseball in America but I don't own any.
