The Relationship between Fan and Social Culture
In ancient China, fan and women have a unique relationship. Fan is loved by women and therefore evolved into a kind of spiritual sustenance and dependence. Besides the gentle and elegant characteristic, the hidden cultural connotation in the round fan is also an important reason.
In ancient China, people followed the moral principles of "The Three Cardinal Guides and The Five Constant Virtues" and "Man Is Superior to Woman". So it's very unseemly for women to be in the spotlight. Under this cultural background, they formed the behavior of reticence, introversion and softness. The cover of fan just helped the females to express the characteristics.
Straw Fans
Pujiang straw fan weaving art has a long history, which can be traced back to the Song Dynasty. Long time ago, the people in Pujiang have customs of using straw fan to convey their feelings to the others. If a girl is newly engaged, the man should bring Zongzi to the girl's family at the time of the Dragon Boat Festival. At the meantime, the girl would use the exquisitely woven straw fans as a gift back to the man. These straw fans were sent to his friends and relatives to show his finance's respect and friendship.
At the time, it was also said that the more delicate the fan, the more skillful the girl's hand was. The more beautiful the fan, the more beautiful the girl was. As a consequence, most rural women were able to weave straw fans in those days, especially young women. They weave their hope and love into the fan, in order to show their love to the lovers.
Distribution of Chinese Fan Industry
With the popularity of fan in daily life, the industry of making fan developed in different areas. The early fan industry center was in the area of Qi and Chu. In the Song Dynasty, especially in the Southern Song Dynasty, the capital Lin 'an (Hangzhou) was the most concentrated and famous place. At that time, the fan was so popular that it formed a two miles long fan street.
From the Ming and Qing Dynasty, Sichuan and Jiangnan were undoubtedly the most developed areas of fan industry. The famous Jinling Fan and Gusu Fan are well known throughout the country. The folding fan technology and production scale in Hangzhou was the top among the country during that period.

在古代中国，“三纲五常”、“男尊女卑”的社会中，女性抛头露面是一种很不得体的举止。在这种文化背景下，她们形成了含蓄内敛，柔情似水的行为特征，而扇子的遮掩恰好能够表现出女性的矜持。
麦秆扇
浦江麦秆扇编织艺术历史悠久，缘起于宋代。很久很久以前，浦江县民间就有用麦秆扇传情达意的风俗。若哪家闺女新订婚，男方必须在端午节的时候挑粽子到女方，而女方就用编织精巧的麦秆扇作为礼物回赠给男方。少则二三十把，多则一百来把，分送给男方的亲朋好友表示尊敬和友好。
当时，还有这样的说法：扇子打得越精细，就表明姑娘的手越巧。扇子打得越漂亮，就显得姑娘越美丽。所以在那个年代，大部分农村妇女都会编织麦秆扇，尤其是年轻姑娘。她们把希翼和爱心编织进扇里，向心上人表明自己的心迹。
中国扇业的分布
随着扇在日常生活中的普及，制扇业在不同的地区发展起来。早期扇业中心当在齐、楚一带，故有“齐纨楚竹”的说法。宋代的制扇业，尤其是南宋的制扇业，都城临安（杭州）是最集中和最著名的地方，甚至出现了长达二里地的扇街。及至明清，四川和江南，无疑是扇业最发达的地区，著名的金陵扇和姑苏扇名扬全国，杭州的折扇技艺与生产规模，可谓首屈一指。
