What would you do?
So my son came home from his first Gym class in the first grade and told me that he needed to get a new gym bag. We had sent his extra clothes for gym in a reusable cloth bag, the type you get at many stores. The issue is that all of the other kids have a bag with a string that they carry over their shoulder. I knew the type of bag he was talking about. It is a shoe bag. They have draw strings and you can wear it similar to a back pack. I had many of these when I used to run track
So we head out to sportcheck looking for a new bag for him to use at school. We find the bags and he says "no dad, it should only have one string so I can carry it over one shoulder". I tell him that they all have 2 strings. People just put both strings over the same shoulder. Being only 5 years old, he didn't agree with me and we went on an endless mission looking for some sort of bag with a single draw string that he can carry over his shoulder.
After hours of searching stores at the mall (not one of my favourite things to do) we came up empty handed. We have no new bag but I have a very disappointed son.
Now a little known skill of mine is sewing. I do not brag about or even talk about this skill with many. So when we get home I sit him down and have a talk with him. I told him that I would attempt to make him a bag similar to what he was describing. I told him that we could go through his old baby blankets and he could pick one out. Below are the images of my success story!
My favourite part is that he started out wanting something that everyone else had, he ended up having a one of a kind bag that he was extremely proud of and ended up showing off to kids at school.
He now takes it to school and is excited for the days that he has Gym class!

This is an awesome skill, and I think you should be proud of it ! I think you deserve the Best dad award for making this awesome gym bag !
Thanks! I am pretty awesome
You are a role model and when I have a kid I will try my best to set the bar as high as you !
I think being an older parent helps out. We didn't have Luke until we were into our 30's so I feel that we were more established and had already completed many of the "me" activities. I find it is much easier to give up time for others as I have aged.
I see your point and I think like you say that age really matters. But either way, people choose to use their time differently.. I think if you have a kid definitely he or she should be expected to get most of your free time. But in reality many kids end up in front of the tv or iPad .
It's really sad that many parentz don't have time for their kids like you do. You're a great father. Don't relent sir.

You are very good father :)
Thanks, I try my best!
I am also a good sewer... but not a great one. I can hem pants and drapes and perform straight lines!
At least it was enough for him gym bag!

Dude, that's bad ass! Well done and huge parenting win! I love it.
I remember those shoe bags running track with you at PENN. :)
Well...I didn't really "run" as much as I threw myself down a runway and up in the air.
Still my favourite event to watch.
Only a special person can compete in the vault.
I couldn't do it.
Wow! That's going above the call of duty!
I remember well the endless searches through the mall for the exact thing Aiden wanted at 5. Though I don't remember what exactly it was we were looking for. Of course the first place you go you have a knock down drag out melt down because dad is SURE you've found exactly what the kiddo wanted, but kiddo is just as sure it is nothing like what he wants!
I never got as far as creating what he was looking for myself though. You win!
haha
skills to appease the 5 year old logic...amazing
I am seriously impressed... first of all by your patience, but most of all by your sewing skills! Great job!!!
Thanks.
I always like to try to do things myself. Anything from changing break pads to hemming my own pants! There is a feeling of accomplishment attached to success!
Absolutely... and that is a pretty diverse skill set to have. I can't use a sewing machine or change brake pads :D
I admire your parenting. Being there for your family whatever it takes. I could imagine you busy making that bag with your son watching in excitement and appreciation. I vote you as the best dad ever. God bless you
