I don't understand the game at all.

You use a main card called a summoner to pick your team. Each team has specific cards with specific abilities. Melee monsters in the front , Magic monsters attack from every position and archers in the back is the basic game play strategy.

So for a start, how do I get this summoner? I just have 3 cards on my steemmonsters account.

Some are included in the starter set that cost $10. The starter set contains 30 cards which contains some summoners and monsters. You can also buy them directly from the market on the official site or win them in giveaways or tournaments. You can collect / trade / Sell without purchase but if you want to play in the tournaments or leagues you first need to purchase a starter pack.

If you are thinking of signing up my referral link is below. I run special Steem Related giveaways for anyone signed up under it regardless of if they purchase a starter pack or not. Use your Steem details to sign in.

Are the starter packs still $10? Or is there anywhere to get that at a discount?

There may be some people who sell them at a lower price.

Additionally, you may be able to sign up on the reflink of someone so they can then give back 5% of the $10 ($0.50) -> It would cost only $9.50.

If you want, I can also let you try the game on one of my alternative accounts (which I don't use for SteemMonsters anyways). You'll be able to decide for yourself if it's worth the $10 and maybe even make a part of the $10 through the borrowed account.

I will happily give back the $0.50 commission fee if you are interested in that deal @nmcougal94. With the condition of Your name will need to show up in my affiliated sign ups list for me to issue you the refund. If you are already signed up under someone else I won't be able to give you the discount as I won't be the one getting the sign up bonus to give it back to you.

Still $10 but is well worth it. With some grinding in the daily league and playing in tournaments you could win that $10 back. Not many games give you a chance to get your money back once purchased. If you have any more questions I will be happy to answer them.

As a card game goes, this has caught my interest. Just can't quite justify the cost of "real" money to join the party. $10 is small taters, sure. But the exchanges (that I have access to) do not deal with transactions at under $100 or even $50. We've been here on the Steem platform for over a year now, and still don't even have 150 Steem. For us, it's better to build up our power -as slow as it is going - versus using that balance to buy into a game. Even if that game pays out -eventually- in more Steem. It feels kinda selfish to use what little Steem we do have on a game, vs using it to vote on content to support the community and users we follow. Even if our power is week, it seems better used that way than on a game. If that makes sense.

Just got kinda confused a little by your wording.
You don't actually have to buy the Starter Set with cryptocurrency.
You can actually use your own credit card or PayPal.
Unless, if you mean that you have no access to these two either, then okay.

That's a very good point. Paypal is how I purchased my starter set.

Thanks for bringing it up as it completely slipped my mind when creating my response to @tillysfamilyfarm.

I completely understand. My growth here has been slow as well. The great thing about SM is that 100% of the investment can be earned back so I look at it as a placement holder for that $10 instead of a lost $10. It can be difficult to win back that $10 with just the $10 starter pack purchase but it can be done with steady game play in a relative short period of time via earning free daily cards and selling them on the market or placing in some novice/bronze level tournaments.

Even if you don't feel like buying the starter pack/ playing in tournaments there are plenty of giveaways here on the blockchain that award free cards. You could enter and win some and sell them on the market to help your Steem growth. There is no purchase needed for collecting / trading or selling SM cards.
