Steem Monsters: Reviewing The Curious Case Of The Spineback Wolf

The Spinback Wolf remains a difficult card to evaluate. At max level, the monster supports a respectable 4-damage and 6-speed attribute combination which should allow for it to attack and hit almost any opponent right away. It also has 2 armor which should delay an opponents first return strike, provided it's not magical.

Yet with only 6-health, the Spineback Wolf is highly susceptible to magical attack. Against a Water Magic team he might not even be able to make it through Round 1 of combat. This is especially so without any protective abilities like shield or void. This automatically makes him out to be a pretty poor tank. And at 5-mana cost, one would hope that he would offer tank-worthy services.

So where is the best place to use the Spineback Wolf? Arguably it would have to be as a front defender given his purpose as a speedy attacker armed with the thorns ability to allow would-be opposing attackers to injure themselves. Yet given his vulnerabilities in poor health, he's surely not going to last long against magical teams. To place the Spineback Wolf in the second-in-line spot would leave him vulnerable to splash damage attacks and make irrelevant his near first-strike capability.

So... Spineback Wolf remains a bit of a poor tank, but a strike first monster who may suit decently well against melee-centric opponents, which is hardly something one should prepare for.
