World's biggest bonfire (reworked for SteemitWorldMap)

So, in The Netherlands there is the tradition of the New Year's Bonfire. Historically, I guess this started as a small bonfire to burn the old stuff to make way for the new. A sort of symbolic renewal, or a way to get rid of that dying Christmas tree. Anyway, now there are legal (for about a day or two, but seen for about a month or two) fireworks, large bonfires and lots of people going crazy. Great mix...

Anyway, in my first few years here I used to live in a rougher neighbourhood. Our first New Year (we were warned) was full of people throwing firecrackers at us and shooting rockets at each other. We even had the pleasure of seeing a car on fire! We had some guests from Australia that night, and they were too scared to go out as the crescendo of explosions (yes, bins and recycling dumps were exploded for the sheer fun of it) grew towards midnight. However, a group of three of us did step out for midnight whilst the others stayed in the safety of the apartment (relative safety, there were rockets being bounced off the windows...). We saw what we thought was a giant bonfire, nearly a story high, blazing away on the road. And people with were just throwing rockets and fireworks into it. With expected results, lots of projectiles going sideways (humanity at it's best!).

Anyway, we read in the papers the next day that this was supposedly a great year for the city, because only less than a 100 cars were torched and no schools!

Oookay, years later I learnt about the yearly tournament between two beaches to build the biggest bonfire. This is where it gets a bit crazy. There are no words to describe this, so on to the official video:

This is completely nuts, yet somehow much safer than the ad hoc craziness in my old neighbourhood.

So, if you are in The Hague on New Year's Eve and can't think of anything better than a touch of fire worship, drop by Scheveningen Beach. Bring sunscreen!

Not the exact spot for the pin, but I think you will notice the bonfire...
