POETRY | DAY 28 | Musical Chairs

Musical Chairs (Headlines #1), poetry by @naquoya.

Day 28 of 100 for @d-pend's Poetry Challenge

Musical Chairs

The man in the big grey suit
Sat the child down and spat out his words
So that they formed a crust
Around the perimeter of the child's
Sense of self and wonder

"You'll do as I tell you."
He spoke like a fire breathing dragon
Pumped full of life's anguish and resentments
Towards all that is good and holy
and desiring of life

The child had heard it all before
So many times he had lost count
He allowed the words to filter through
Trickle down and run their course
As they always had

Perhaps this is life, he thought
Perhaps this is the game and he's playing it wrong
But size seems to matter
As venom revealed itself in the eyes
Of the grey suited angry man

"If only you were more like..."
He stopped listening at this point
Musical chairs going around in his head
Sounding like words now stripped of their pain
And given a new course.

Great @naquoya. I like the flow and the story. Just enough set up and then punch line:

"If only you were more like..."
He stopped listening at this point
Musical chairs going around in his head

Thank you for putting this familiar story in poetic form.

BTW ... I met a Japanese student today. He told me he was from Naqouya. I was glad we had something in common.

Thanks for reading @mineopoly. Maybe I should travel to Japan then, see if there is a connection of sorts for me there. Life can work in strange ways like that, sometimes.

Take your time @naquoya. You are in the same time zone I think so it would be worth a visit. Life is rushed in Korea. I have been to Japan a few times and found it strangely quiet.

(Wow... I finally got a 1 cent upvote out of 10%. Things are getting back to normal.)

This is raw, and true, and painful.. We break our children’s spirits with perceived good intentions. Thank you for your amazing poem.

Thanks for reading, and appreciating the gist of this poem. It can be a difficult topic, but writing is a beneficial way confronting it, I find.

This poem for me is a great reminder to be gentle with my children and to not push my own insecurities about the world on to them. A great insight for adults.
