Hi Steemian how are you today? Hopefully you are healthy and creative work.
Today I join in competition 32 which held by @xpilar. He makes it and ask us to create and post a story based on his art work. If you want to join in his competition you can check this post

Overcoming erosion on the slopes with Terracing Technique

Earth relief is very diverse. Starting from the lowlands on the coast to the high mountains. Part of the earth's relief that is no less important is the land in the incline. The great potential as an agro-cultural area will make the community try to maximize its utilization. But unfortunately, this area also has a large potential for danger.
Sloping land is often a contributing factor to erosion that can affect other areas. Erosion on sloping land causes deposition in downstream areas. If this sediment enters the river it will cause the flow of water to decrease. Sloping land is also very vulnerable to landslides. This can cause casualties for the residents in the vicinity.
Communities around the area with hilly contours and sloping land need to be better educated so that they can make good use of existing land and still pay attention to land conservation.
So far, the use of sloping land in the form of gardens and terraces is known to have a high risk of erosion and landslides. So many farmers are reluctant to use sloping land for food crops, they only use it for cash crops.
On the other hand, the need for food is getting higher, given the population that continues to increase every day. Therefore extensification of agricultural land is one of the choices that cannot be avoided. So that the use of sloping land for agricultural activities becomes one of the realistic choices amid the limited land available.

Terraceing techniques

Sloping land that is to be made as an agricultural area must be prepared in advance.
Terrace techniques basically resemble steps in a multi-storey building. sloping land by making the field of agriculture straight up the slope of the land. The area to be planted should not be too wide. Especially if the slope is steep. It aims to reduce the risk of erotion and landslide.
At the bottom which is bordered by cliffs for dams that are wide enough so that they are not too risky
make land
Do not force all the land that we have made up the steps to be processed all just to get a lot of results because it will cause landslides. In the lower embankment plant with reinforcement plants such as Gliricidia, Kaliandra, Indigofera or other types that can be as well as a source of natural fertilizer.
At the certain parts such as in a corner of land can be planted with permanent plants such as durian, rambutan, mangosteen, duku, banana, coffee or other plants that have the same height. Plants with tall trees should be planted on the lowest slope while plants that are not so tall are planted on the uppermost slope.

Support other techniques </h2.>
The application of this terracing technique must be supported by other techniques such as crop rotation and regeneration and protective slope treatments that are at once sse.
This must be done to keep the terraces sticking and maintaining productivity.

1. Crop rotation
Crop rotation means doing crop rotation. we cannot plant one type of plant continuously.
The best way to rotate crops is to plant cereal (oats) such as corn and rice. After that the root plants such as yams, potatoes, carrots, and others. After that, legumes like long beans, beans, peanuts, soybeans, and others. After that, fruit plants such as chili, melon, watermelon, cucumber, eggplant, and others. In this way too, soil fertility is well maintained and the chain of pests can also be broken.

2. Regenerate slope protection plants
On sloping land we must protect the cliff protective plants. If you see plants that are too old should be replaced with young ones, this can make effective techniques that are useful in preventing erosion.
We must be diligent in caring for the slope protection plants which are also the fence of this land.
The thing to do is take care of the hedgerows to keep it growing dense and healthy. If we treat it well, the longer the nitrogen supplementary plants work properly. The area will also look green and beautiful. The combination of art, beauty, sustainable nature and abundant harvest.
Thus my writing this time may be useful for all of us.

Preventing erosion is quite the challenge! Here in Thailand, terracing is common, and we also use specific plants like Vetiver grass, to hold very steep slopes together in heavy monsoonal weather.
