Good to Know: TAHO - A Philippine Street Drink

The Philippines, having been the melting pot of Asia before, has been influenced greatly by its many colonizers and visitors. The Filipino traits, characteristics, and attitudes have been derived from these influences and incorporated them to our very own. While their influences have impacted the Filipino way of living their lives, they did so with our gastronomy that fused the flavors that we enjoy today.

One of these flavors is the one that we can buy in the streets. A street drink that is influenced heavily by the Chinese.

My share of Taho after sending my son to school

The TAHO

The Taho, often sold in the morning, is a drink that is made of soft, silken tofu that is drenched and mixed with a darkened runny syrup eventually topping it with Sago (Similar to the Tapioca Peals, but their origins are different).

Inspired by innovation, nowadays, Taho peddlers already add condensed milk to top your Taho drink, apart from making it sweeter, it makes the whole drink become creamier.

A Love Forged

The Taho, is loved by Filipinos. It is something we look forward to buying, when we are out and about early in the morning. A drink after a short walk to the market, or after a jog in the streets, the Taho is very comforting to drink early in the morning.

While our love for Taho never ceases, our love for it was forged being a third world country. Where poverty looms, street food and drinks is always available for the masses. Cheap as it comes, we love our fair share of Taho in the morning. Often times, we even think of Taho as a desert to accompany a hearty breakfast.

Nutrition?

It cannot be helped to ask the question, what nutrients will I be getting after the consumption of street foods. With this topic, the Taho will not be spared. The good thing is that there are plenty of details we can find on the internet that tells us about the nutrition facts that come with a small cup of the Taho drink.

But from what my father has taught me in the past, they believe that drinking Taho strengthens the muscles and provides energy for the whole day. A superdrink, often times he called Taho.

But assessing my father's beliefs and the nutrition facts, this maybe because of the protein that is present in the soft Tofu that helps build the muscles, and the carbohydrates you can burn for the day.

Take these information with a grain of salt, I am no nutrition expert, but I do love my fair share of Taho in the morning.

Finish Line

While I love my Taho, I do find other people stray away from the street food. While sold in the streets, how it being manufactured is not really known to many. Often times, questions are raised regarding the safety of consuming Taho, the sterility of the tools that created the street drink.

Some of my friends often even blamed their 'Taho in the morning' for the diarrhea they have suffered the rest of the day.

What may be true, or maybe isn't, who knows. That is a mystery you are going to have to take on if you want to taste what Taho is like in the streets. But if you really want to try it, in a much safer fashion. I believe that there are establishments already selling them which are profound enough to be selling bad items. A little research should show you the way.

oh god its look so delicious!
In Indonesia there is like that but in different style of serving.

It is very delicious, well for me. In my research I was actually able to find your variation of taho there as well as from other asian countries. I am curious though, do they serve it hot or cold there?
