How to Perform Basic CPR With a Tune We Know By "Heart"
And remember- anyone can perform CPR! You do not need first aid certification. Keep reading for the technique, and a handy song to play that helps- you already know it!
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, or CPR, is the act of forcibly compressing the chest to keep blood moving throughout the body after cardiac arrest. All the cells in the body need oxygen to survive. They also require a constant supply of nutrients and rapid removal of waste products. Oxygen and nutrients are carried through the body by blood which is pumped by the heart.
If a cardiac arrest occurs, blood will stop circulating around the body. Breathing will also cease as well though it may not stop completely for several minutes.Without a continuous supply of oxygen, the cells in the body begin to die. Brain cells are the most sensitive, after only 4 to 5 minutes of no oxygen brain cells start dying, which leads to brain damage and death.
CPR keeps oxygenated blood flowing through the body to keep vital organs alive. In and of itself, CPR won't restart the patients heart. It simply keeps them alive until paramedics arrive with a defibrillator to shock the heart for restart.
First, when someone has collapsed:
When you find someone not breathing, start CPR. Interlock your hands and place them in the middle of the persons chest and push down firmly. You can give 30 compression, then 2 rescue breaths- but the breaths are not absolutely required.
Do not check for a pulse as it wastes valuable time.
Do not stop CPR until the patient breathes or coughs or paramedics arrive with a defibrillator. If they start breathing place them on their side so their tongue does not get in the airway.
You should aim for a rate of 100 – 120 chest compression's a minute.
The perfect song to play in your head while performing CPR is Staying Alive by the Bee Gees! It has the perfect amount of beats per minute, and you are willing the person to "Stay Alive."

Very cool @arbitrarykitten. I never knew that about the Bee Gee's song! That's easy to remember! Thanks for the tip :)
You are very welcome!
The latest directions in Israel are to use Agadou which is a song from the 80s and has a high BPM count that is better.
The reason I know this is because I recently did a first aid course and they informed us on this update to the CPR "theme".
Alternatively, if oldies are not your thing, there's a playlist of songs released by a well known hospital. Also good for cardio, I guess. :P

We were thought the CPR on my civil service's education period along other skills and everybody got a official certificate card from Red Cross for completing the first aid course. A time not wasted!
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me
...although, the lifeless victim won't say that, that's probably what s/he would say if able.
and those pants and high heels from the 70's are just fabulous, haha
That is good, I think everyone should be taught CPR. In basic education!
Fabulous, yes indeedy ;)

I actually watched a movie the other day and there was CPR in one of the scenes, and I wondered to myself then, what i would do if I had to give some one CPR!!
At least I will remember the song if i am in a situation where I need to know it - lets hope that will be never!!
Seriously, just like what I wrote, firm compressions to the beat of Staying Alive...
I hope not too! But it's good to have the knowledge just in case
Yes, it is! And I’ll remember it this way now! Thanks x
You are very welcome!
I am not sure if you have ever watched the US series The Office, but one of the episode revolves around a CPR course and this song is used, it was a hilarious episode and I had a good giggle now, your post reminded me of it ;) Now I have "AH AH AH AH Stay Alive" stuck in my head :)
I've watched some but not that episode. I can only imagine the disaster it turns into! Lol
Wow, i've taken CPR courses, but this is the first I've heard of using a song to keep your rhythm!
Thanks for posting!
Your welcome! I'm happy to spread awareness, the thought of having to give CPR can be daunting, and this song helps bring confidence :)
