Microworkers Will Destroy Steemit - 100+ Bought Accounts in the Last Few Days

in #steemitdefenseleague6 years ago (edited)

I recently found three different simultaneous campaigns running on Microworkers to take control of over 100 Steemit accounts.

This phenomena is not new - in fact I have written about it before because this is quite likely how the Steemit "Defense League" was created: https://steemit.com/abuse/@pirateofthedtube/exposing-the-steemit-defense-league-bought-accounts-on-microworkers-w-screenshot

One of these jobs appears to be from the same person who I believe created the "Defense League" - known on Microworkers as Member_198227. They also created a previous separate job where they got 70+ accounts. It is now safe to say they have well over 100 accounts, and may even be around 150 or higher if they have made other jobs I have not noticed.

The other two users who have created these tasks are people I have not seen before, although one of them appears to be South Asian, which is where the creator of the Steemit "Defense" League is from based on South Asian language articles those accounts tend to resteem.

This is an existential threat to Steemit, in my opinion. When people can buy 100+ accounts for less than 50 cents each, they may be able to make money simply by buying accounts this way and selling the steem on them. This is especially true since these accounts may be used (which also makes them harder to spot and revoke delegation from). Even with low voting power, 150 accounts with 15SP can do a lot of damage with false flags, which presents a whole new threat.

On that note, I ask for a few things. First off, I am a smaller account, so downvotes from Steemit "Defense" League, even if they are worth very little, are a real danger to me. Therefore, I ask that people upvote this post if you found it interesting or useful. That is more out of protection than anything else. I assume I will be targeted for this post. Second, it is great if people share this information, link, and screenshot, but please link to this article if you do.

Thank you, and I hope this goes some way toward exposing just how sad this effort to rip apart Steemit really is.

I think the best way forward at this point is for major accounts on Steemit, particularly witnesses, to email and complain to Microworkers about them allowing such tasks on their website. Microworkers is generally grey-hat at worst, and probably do not want to allow their users to ruin other websites. Thanks for reading and I hope this information can be useful to users out there!

I'm ready for another wave of them.

Good! But I am worried about what this does to the site. We can talk all day about how many accounts we have on the site, but what does it mean if who knows how many hundred are like this?

Well, let's see how things turn out after the next hard fork in September.
