The MANGYANS of Mina de Oro
The Natives of Oriental Mindoro
The 'Mangyans' are known to be the ethnic group of the Philippines usually found in Island of Oriental Mindoro , but some are also found island of Tablas and Sibuyan in the province of Romblon as well as in Albay, Negros and Palawan. The word 'mangyan' means , a person without any reference or nationality. If you are familiar with the Aborigenese of Australia, i may say they are like that.
As my personal experience , i met a lot of 'mangyans in my province, Oriengal Mindoro, even in our place or town itself. We have this belief that they are the first ones to arrived in our province but when Tagalogs, us, started to invade the island , natives started to transfer to locations near mountains or to be certain others wanted to be in mountains itself. Today, mangyans usually give services to tagalogs such as cleaning the yard , trimming grasses or as a care taker of a certain lot , in exchange of money , food or clothings in order for them to survive.
Some of them also engage themselves with agriculture . Mostly they are planting , sweet potato ,rice , taro, bananas and many other crops. And others also do handicrafts, usually women , and those products they sell to the tagalogs and all other people and they earn from that. They have their own language , called tawbuid , and their way of writing is the Hanuno'o script.
My family do have this what we called own mangyans, those who are very kind and loyal to us. They are the ones taking care of the parents' lot , those that are not near to our house in the province. So we give them clothes , food and money as well. They can also speak tagalog. And when you get to know them , you'll also see the beauty of the mangyans.
